A scanning electron microscope (SEM) uses a tungsten filament, and electron gun, and a detector. When the filament is heated, the electrons in the electron gun undergo thermionic emission. They "fire" out of the electron gun, hit the target, and transfer their energy to secondary electrons. These secondary electrons then bounce back to the detector which uses them to create the image.
