After speaking with the recruiter, I knew the average first year salary in this dept was $45-65k/year. I responded with, "I would like to exceed the average." I was told the interviewer was concerned that I was ok with making the average. Not necessarily true, however, I didn't want to price myself out of the position either, especially after what HR had already told me. All other questions were as expected.
