What have you done when a creative, capable engineer is consistently underperforming?

It's never happened to me because I focus on motivating my team. I had to use an example of dealing with a guy on another team who was brilliant but a jerk, which involved a lot of patience and sustained pressure. The expected answer was that I should tell them frankly that they're not performing, and if they don't shape up they should be fired.
