General Overview

The Project Engineer will work on the Design and Project Management of railway maintenance equipment. This role will focus on design and drafting of parts and assemblies, analysis of structural components, generation of bills of material, and documentation of operation and maintenance procedures along with interfacing directly with customers, vendors and the manufacturing team for various projects. The successful candidate will be technically oriented with strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This individual will work closely with the Engineering Manager to ensure that engineering tasks are completed on schedule and equipment designs are under budget. The Project Engineer will also work closely with the Field Service Manager to schedule resources for timely completion of all field work. Occasional travel within North America will be required – approximately 10%.

Responsibilities

• Manage projects with Class 1 freight railroads, major inner city transit authorities and construction general contractors
• Set baseline job budgets during project initiation to monitor and adjust as needed throughout the life of the project
• Build master project schedules (gantt charts) from sales estimates and subcontractor schedules
• Evaluate equipment specifications with engineering to determine specification compliance; generate compliance matrices as required
• Manage the original scope of supply and thoroughly communicate this with the customer; process change orders as necessary
• Interface directly with customers as the main point of contact between engineering, manufacturing and the client
• Develop and improve designs for new and existing maintenance equipment using 2D and 3D CAD software
• Draft and revise 2D manufacturing drawings using ANSI and Geometric Drafting & Tolerancing standards (2009 ASME y14.5)
• Assess sub-components and electrical components for interfacing with the structural equipment
• Interface with outside vendors and suppliers of sub-components to verify compliance of product specifications
• Generate bills of material based on fabricated and purchased components for import into the ERP database
• Interface with vendors and the manufacturing team to track delivery of components and resolve issues as they arise.
• Organize shipments and generate packing lists within the ERP for proper shipment tracking
• Document and revise procedures for operation and maintenance of equipment
• Communicate with Executives, Managers, and co-workers in formal and informal settings
• Adhere to a fast-paced schedule and timeline while maintaining a high-quality standard of work.
• Assembly floor and vendor/machine shop support as required
• Schedule resources for factory assembly and/or testing and field service work

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
• Computer proficient; Experience with designing and drafting in 3-D CAD (SolidWorks strongly preferred)
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products
• Demonstrated technical writing abilities, and strong verbal skills
• Self-motivated with effective communication and team-working skills
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

• 5-7 years’ work experience within Mechanical Design and/or Project Engineering
• Demonstrated understanding of general electrical design and principles
• Experience with Project Management software preferred (MS Project, Smartsheet, ClickUp, etc.)
• Prior experience with Finite Element Analysis, ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation
• Experience in construction management is a plus
• Demonstrated project and team experience
