Substation Project Engineer II
We are seeking a Substation Project Engineer II to support renewable generation substation projects from early-stage development through construction and commissioning. This role is based in Juno Beach, FL.
Job Overview
In this role, you will lead engineering activities and coordinate with internal teams, external engineering partners, suppliers, and project stakeholders to deliver safe, cost-effective, and compliant substation projects.
The ideal candidate will apply a broad knowledge of engineering principles, project execution, and renewable generation substation design. This position provides technical direction, supports project planning and execution, and helps ensure deliverables meet applicable codes, standards, schedules, and business objectives.
Travel between worksites and field locations is an essential function of this role. Candidates must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to attend meetings at other worksites or visit renewable generation substation project sites as needed.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Support assigned renewable generation substation projects from early-stage development through construction and commissioning.
- During the conceptual phase, partner with project managers and development teams to define engineering requirements, scope, and technical assumptions for transmission proposals and greenfield renewable energy projects.
- Plan, coordinate, and complete large-scale or multiple medium-to-small complex projects within budget and schedule guidelines.
- Develop detailed work plans, schedules, project estimates, resource plans, and status reports.
- Secure required resources and use formal processes and tools to manage budgets, risks, changes, and project performance.
- Lead project meetings and maintain project tracking, reporting, and analysis.
- Identify issues and challenges, validate results, and implement effective solutions.
- Provides information to internal and external clients on moderate to complex issues.
- Create and communicate presentation materials, reports, and project updates for internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight of external engineers of record for assigned renewable generation substation projects to ensure compliance with generation interconnection agreements, scopes of work, project specifications, site-specific design requirements, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and other applicable industry codes and standards.
- Secures engineering consulting resources from approved suppliers by developing scopes of work, securing bids, evaluating proposals, and awarding work through internal supply chain processes.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders to secure substation sites and support engineering updates, data, and permits required to design and build substations.
- Competitively sources, selects, and contracts geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services, while supporting the cost estimating team with scope assumptions.
- Coordinate engineering deliverables in support of competitive transmission requests for proposals and awarded project design and construction. Deliverables may include scopes of work, issued-for-bid packages, issued-for-procurement packages, issued-for-construction packages, design criteria, and as-built drawings.
- Coordinates with other groups to ensure assigned renewable generation substation projects are successful. Generally responsible for representing internal and external project interests, including presentations and briefings on progress, issues, and risk mitigation with various levels of management.
- Supports transmission services during review of interconnection documentation, including system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic studies, and interconnection agreements. Ensures transmission owner requirements and engineering design are consistent, compliant with applicable ISO requirements, and incorporated into the project design. Must be able to work with and communicate regularly with transmission owners, operators, and ISOs to ensure project deliverables meet specific off-taker requirements and are timely and accurate.
- Manages all long-lead major material orders to minimize risk of delays or budget impacts. Assists supply chain teams with substation project scope-of-work creation, review, approval, and preparation of purchasing requests for engineering services and materials in a timely manner.
- Supports estimating teams with template updates, project feedback, technical support, and scope modifications.
- Collaborate with project engineering resources across disciplines to determine project priorities, work plans, and responsibilities.
- Ensure projects are implemented safely, efficiently, cost-effectively, and in accordance with processes, procedures, industry standards, and policies.
- Supports assigned project commissioning activities to meet business objectives.
- Support legal and regulatory teams with filings, depositions, hearings, and related documentation as needed.
- Collaborates with component OEMs to enhance or adapt designs to better align with company standards and project requirements.
- Conducts external research and stays abreast of new developments or innovative advancements pertaining to the project.
- Provides coaching, leadership, and direction to project teams.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Professional Engineer (PE)
- Six Sigma Black Belt Certified
- Six Sigma Green Belt Certified
- Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certified
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Structural Engineering.
- 6+ years of experience in high-voltage substation design and engineering, preferably within renewable generation projects.
- Project engineering and/or project management experience with a strong bias for action; PMP and/or PE certification in a related discipline is a plus.
Some travel within North America may be required.
Pay: $60.00 - $65.00 per hour
