Design Project Leader (DPL)

The primary function of a Design Project Leader (DPL) is to support Design Project Managers (DPM) in executing AutoCAD drawings, CorelDraw drawings and project tasks, while beginning to manage a client’s portfolio of projects by successfully meeting client program goals and maintaining design responsibility for all program aspects. This role is directly involved in the design and manufacturing of products and begins to be the primary link between d|fab, the Account Executive, and the client regarding design and responsible for design efficiencies. Our DL’s should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment, and need to show confidence in their work, yet work with creative and constructive review. Must be proficient in 3D modeling and rendering software. Knowledge in AutoCAD (required), CorelDraw, Adobe Illustrator, and SketchUp is needed.

Essential functions of Design Project Leader:

• Use DFAB drawing standards and processes
• Develop décor quotes for estimating projects
• Communicate directly with clients, architects, and contractors as required, as a project evolves.
• Oversee multiple individual but related design/décor projects within the client’s program.
• Begin to strategically plan, manage, develop, implement and oversee projects, deadlines

and priorities to ensure timely completion.

• Meet deadlines given to you by DPM or other management team members, and to

communicate fully when deadlines may not be met. Plan for solutions.

• Brainstorm / collaborate / problem-solve in a team effort or individually
• Review or initiate and check décor write-ups for estimating department to use for quoting

product. Discussing the scope of work for project w/ Account Executive.

• Interpret client’s established décor package(s) on a store-by-store basis and make design

decisions that stay within the recognized guidelines

• Expand shop drawing details or generate new details in CorelDraw as deemed necessary for

manufacturing on a store-by-store basis

• Prepare conceptual, construction & shop drawings, finish boards, specifications, etc. as

needed for presentation to client

• Generate take-off quantities and lineal feet of product required
• Communicate concerns and questions to the client relative to maintaining the design intent

of an established décor package

• Work directly with engineering and manufacturing to adjust / modify designs as required once they are in production, and maintain design intent / integrity
• Maintain and regularly update client’s décor book(s) as revisions occur
• Track time daily within time entry database for proper project billing
• Other duties as assigned by a manager or supervisor

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Practical knowledge of retail design and architecture, and creative skill set to develop directional signage, graphics and themed interiors
• Ability to read and understand architectural drawings
• Basic graphics & signage material knowledge
• A keen mind that pays strong attention to detail and has the ability to design for

manufacturing across a diverse set of projects

• Strong sensitivity to aesthetics and design intent
• A compelling interest in manufacturing processes and continuous improvement.
• Familiarity with precision metal fabrication, extrusions, composites, woodworking, and acrylics.
• Knowledge of décor and millwork manufacturing and fabrication techniques, tools and
• materials preferred
• Knowledge of graphics production processes
• AutoCAD: 3 years
• 2D design (CorelDraw and/or Adobe Illustrator): 3 years
• 3D design (SketchUp (or similar): 3 years
• Adobe Creative Cloud/Creative Suite: 3 years

Project Management:

• Manage multiple projects at the same time and still stay focused and on task
• Manage daily priorities, notifying supervisor of any changes that will impact critical project dates
• Track time daily within time entry database for proper project billing
• Maintain and regularly update shop drawings as revisions occur
• Publish weekly project status reports as required to include all current and completed projects

Site Visits - (may be required):

• Field survey existing space, gather reference photos, critical dimensions, etc.
• Possible visits on local projects during construction to address problem issues as they arise
• Evaluation of space after Décor is installed, including final walkthrough for punch list items, finish photos, etc.

Working conditions:

• This position when project loads are busy, may require overtime
• Safety glasses must be always worn when working with team members on the shop floor.
