Freight Conductor/Locomotive Engineer

General Job Description

Coordinate, communicate, and carry out the safe passage of trains. Place cars to facilitate loading/unloading and the makeup an breakdown of trains in a rail yard, industrial plant and/or similar locations. Overtime is mandatory as well as weekend work.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration.
• Review instructions from dispatchers and trainmaster and discuss with locomotive engineer and train crew.
• Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures.
• Receive and transmit information by radio and telephone.
• Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists.
• Communicate clearly (to members of your crew) your intentions while you couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses.
• Exhibit safe and proper procedures while working on and around railroad equipment.
• Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars.
• Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
• Arrive to work at your scheduled time and location, be well rested and ready to work.
• Respect company property, buildings, equipment and vehicles.
• Maintain locomotives by keeping them free of the trash you make.
• While representing this company, speaking with customers, and interacting with other employees YOU MUST practice proper hygiene, and appropriate dress. Foul smell is offensive.
• Maintain and turn in proper and accurate FRA, HOS reports, timesheets, and railcar wheel reports.
• Additional duties as per your supervisor

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability Requirements

• Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.
• Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examinations.
• Troubleshoot work-related problems.
• Possess a valid driver's license.
• Advance to engineer position when required, based on seniority.
• Understand oral and written communications (both general and technical).
• Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems.
• Problem solves, make decisions and provide instructions.
• Quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of a machine or vehicle to exact positions.
• Quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to visual symbols, signals and displays (sound, light, picture, etc.).
• Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
• Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, which includes a pre-employment drug and alcohol test.
• Employees in this position are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as per the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Guidelines. Our policy is ZERO TOLERANCE. We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing as well as random testing. Candidates who test positive for marijuana will be disqualified, regardless of any state or local statute, ordinance, regulation, or other law that legalizes or decriminalizes the use or possession of marijuana, whether for medical, recreational, or other use. The company's pre-employment and random drug testing program is administered in accordance with DOT regulations and applicable law.

Working Conditions

• Wear protective equipment including hearing protection, work boots and safety glasses.
• Available to report to work with two-hour advance notice.
• Work hours and days vary including nights, weekends and holidays.
• Work outside in all weather conditions.
• Ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods of time.
• Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
• Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
• Medium to heavy work. Lifting to 83 pounds on a rare basis.
• Reach/handle/feel/stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/crawl.
