DIRECTOR OF NURSING/NURSE ADMINISTRATOR

QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE):

• Current California R.N. License.
• Familiar with basic Nursing Practice Standards in California Nurse Practice Act.
• Current CPR, ACLS Certification.
• Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
• Minimum of 3-5 years experience in Nursing.
• B.S. in Nursing or related discipline preferred.
• Knowledge of Patient Rights.
• Knowledge of California Consent Law.

ACCOUNTABILITY (JOB RELATIONSHIPS):

• Reports to C.E.O./ President of the Board.
• Supervises—All Nursing Service Personnel.
• Promotions—No formal line of promotions.

RESPONSIBILITIES (FUNCTIONS):

In the interest of maintaining productivity and consistency at the Surgery Center, the Board of Directors requires that the DON be present at the Surgery Center every day. The DON will be expected to work a 40 hour week. Management responsibilities should take up 25 hours a week and clinical duties the other 15 hours.

• Functions within the philosophy and policies of Santa Cruz Surgery Center.
• Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Administratively supervises the work of charge nurses and all operating room and patient care service employees.
• Consults regularly with the CEO and collaborates with the nursing, medical, and business office staff in the decision making or problem solving process.
• Maintains or delegates QA-QI program.
• Maintains ongoing education and training in infection control which can be demonstrated by participation in infection control courses and meetings organized by recognized professional societies (i.e. AORN, APIC) which qualifies her to direct, maintain, and delegate infection control program.
• Ensures timely staff and in-service meetings are held.
• Attends and participates in meetings: Santa Cruz Surgery Center Board, Medical Executive Committee, Continuing Process Improvement Committee, Medical Staff Meetings, ASCA Annual Meeting, CASA Annual Meeting, and provides staff support as needed.
• Recommends educational programs to nursing staff.
• During clinical hours, the DON will perform charge R.N., scrub, circulator, recovery, and pre-anesthesia nursing functions as needed.
• Consults regularly with the CEO to coordinate the development and implementation of the surgery center’s policy and procedure manual; develops, coordinates, communicates, and monitors nursing, facility, and medical staff policies and procedures.
• Ensures that the surgery center’s licenses and accreditations are obtained and maintained in good standing.
• Coordinates with and assists business manager in: the timely processing of accounts payable, payroll for all surgery center employees, maintains surgery center journals and books of account, coordinates both the internal and external marketing of the surgery center, and the ordering and receiving of nonmedical and medical supplies.
• Coordinates with the business manager for the purchase and payment for operating supplies and other materials and supplies as may be needed for the day-to-day maintenance and operation of the surgery center; arranges for the acquisition of new or replacement equipment and furnishings, subject to any facility plans or budget approved by the governing board.

• Coordinates with business manager for the maintenance of the surgery center’s premises in good repair and in full compliance with applicable federal, state, and local government laws.
• Coordinates with business manager to annually prepare complete operating expenditure budgets and shall present them to the governing board for its approval. Monitors budgets and reports on variances.
