Brethren Village is seeking an innovative and proactive executive to serve as our Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The successful applicant will possess: experience and success managing large-scale projects, including facilities / land use projects; a record of initiating and implementing process improvements; strong leadership competencies, including the ability to develop and engage staff, form productive partnerships, and collaborate across an organization to achieve objectives.
Brethren Village, a non-profit Life Plan Community, is home to 1,200 Residents and employs 480 dedicated Team Members. Brethren Village is located in Lititz, PA, a vibrant small city with an active downtown area, rural areas, and top-quality schools and healthcare organizations. Lititz is within easy driving distance, or train ride, of Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York City, and Washington D.C. Brethren Village's Chief Operating Officer will identify and advance strategic priorities; work collaboratively across the organization to drive innovation; help enhance service, efficiency, and effectiveness; help foster a positive and supportive workplace culture and a vibrant living community.
In conjunction with the President and other executives, the Chief Operating Officer will provide effective leadership and oversight for operations and staff; proactively identify opportunities, define priorities, and develop and implement short and long-range plans aligned with the mission of the organization; help ensure sound fiscal management throughout the organization.
Primary responsibilities of the Chief Operating Officer include:
- Participating in long and short-range planning, and proactively identifying opportunities and challenges. In conjunction with the President, providing leadership for the development of the organization’s strategic plans; establishing priorities and specific objectives; ensuring plans are effectively implemented by managers.

Fostering the highest standards of excellence with respect to the organization’s healthcare services, customer service / hospitality, safety and risk management, fiscal management, and other operations. In conjunction with the executive management team, overseeing and evaluating all services provided to Residents, on an ongoing basis.
- Establishing, tracking, and regularly reviewing relevant performance measures and benchmarks. Monitoring key financial and other performance indicators relevant to areas of responsibility; making decisions and taking action based on data / factual information.

Proactively identifying opportunities to enhance service, increase efficiency, increase revenue, and control costs. Working collaboratively with managers to develop, implement, and complete specific process improvement projects.

In conjunction with department managers, overseeing significant campus projects to help ensure such projects remain on-budget and that quality, efficiency, and service objectives are achieved.

Exploring and facilitating opportunities for collaboration / partnerships with external organizations and agencies to enhance services and/or manage costs.

Working with the Vice President, Facilities, helping to determine optimal, future use of land and campus facilities.

Working with the Director of IT, helping to ensure optimal use of technology and applications to enhance efficiency, control costs, and enhance service.

Providing oversight and leadership for contracted Dining and Environmental Services, ensuring that service standards are maintained or exceeded, and budget targets are met. Overseeing service contracts.

Providing effective leadership and management for assigned Team Members.
The Chief Operating Officer performs all work in an ethical manner aligned with Brethren Village's values, and consistently interacts with Residents, Team Members, and other members of the campus community in a professional manner. The Chief Operating Officer maintains open communication with Residents, Team Members, and other constituencies to foster trusting and productive relationships, and fosters positive relations within the broader community to enhance the reputation of the organization.
Work Schedule:

Full-time, benefits-eligible: 40 hours per week, on-site, plus additional hours as needed to fulfill responsibilities.
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be necessary.

Occasional overnight travel may be required.

The COO periodically serves “on-call” and must remain available by phone or email to respond during emergency or urgent situations.

A Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Finance, Marketing, or a related field

Minimum 10 years’ progressively responsible management experience, including experience as an executive with a broad portfolio of responsibilities; proven ability to effectively lead and manage departments, programs, or functions and staff

Prior professional experience in a complex, regulated environment such as senior living, healthcare, or higher education

A record of achievement - the demonstrated ability to formulate short and long-range strategic plans and achieve strategic objectives; effective experience managing or overseeing large projects; experience working through significant organizational challenges

Thorough understanding of financial and economic concepts; ability to analyze financial statements and budget reports; experience budgeting for large departments or projects; ability to develop accurate financial projections and models

A strong technology background or knowledge; ability to use technology to enhance efficiency and service

A process improvement orientation; proven ability to proactively identify and address complex issues and challenges

The ability to form partnerships and influence others in a positive manner; proven ability to positively engage others and work collaboratively to accomplish objectives

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; effective public speaking abilities
