Position Title: Senior Applications Developer

Position Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with business stakeholders, technical teams, analysts, and contractors to modernize legacy data, applications, and code infrastructure serving complex statistical production processes.
- Develop, maintain, test, and enhance software applications that support highly visible and time-sensitive data production activities.
- Support the transition from legacy programs and databases to modern programming languages, analytical tools, and SQL-based data platforms.
- Gain proficiency with legacy programming and database environments (such as FAME) as needed to ensure uninterrupted monthly production workflows and assist ongoing modernization.
- Utilize modern programming languages and analytical technologies, including but not limited to R, Python, and SQL-based tools.
- Analyze and evaluate advanced system and application requirements to drive technical improvements.
- Assess existing applications and identify opportunities for increased performance, maintainability, reliability, and processing efficiency.
- Design and develop software tools, reusable components, subsystems, and supporting technical frameworks that align with business and technical needs.
- Translate complex functional and technical designs into robust, maintainable, and scalable software solutions.
- Create technical documentation including block diagrams, data-flow and logic-flow charts, technical specifications, and other key design artifacts.
- Test, debug, refine, and validate software throughout the software development lifecycle to ensure required functionality and production reliability.
- Prepare and maintain comprehensive documentation at the technical, user, and program levels.
- Manage software configuration and release processes to support controlled and secure deployment cycles.
- Coordinate closely with infrastructure, IT, communications, and other organizational teams to ensure success of technical and operational activities.
- Support secure, reliable file-transfer, data-validation, and production-release procedures to maintain data integrity and operational continuity.
- Stay current with emerging technologies—such as artificial intelligence tools and coding assistants—and determine their appropriate and secure use within the development environment.
- Work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to develop a deep understanding of complex data structures, business rules, processing requirements, and system dependencies.
- Demonstrate strong project ownership and attention to detail by consistently meeting deadlines and supporting time-sensitive production and release schedules.
Essential Skills, Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, physics, economics, or a related quantitative discipline.
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience as a programmer, developer, or systems analyst supporting application development in enterprise or data-intensive environments.
- Significant professional programming experience in R or Python, including end-to-end development and production deployment.
- Demonstrated ability to develop software in accordance with established Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of software analysis, design, development, testing, debugging, deployment, and maintenance in robust production settings.
- Experience analyzing business and technical requirements, and translating them into sound application design and technical specifications.
- Familiarity with designing technical artifacts such as block diagrams, logic-flow charts, and data-flow diagrams.
- Track record of testing, debugging, refining, and documenting production-grade software applications.
- Experience reviewing legacy or existing programs to drive performance, reliability, and maintainability enhancements.
- Well-developed analytical and problem-solving capabilities to address complex system challenges.
- Ability to quickly comprehend complex data structures, system dependencies, and detailed business logic.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated reliability, initiative, and ability to deliver results on time-sensitive or mission-critical projects.
- Strong track record of working both independently and collaboratively as part of multidisciplinary teams.
- U.S. Citizenship is required for consideration.
Qualifications:
- Experience developing with both R and Python is highly desired.
- Familiarity with FAME programming or FAME database software is a plus.
- Experience working with SQL-based platforms, DuckDB, or similar analytical database technologies is strongly preferred.
- Direct experience modernizing legacy application, programming, or database environments is a plus.
- Background supporting statistical, economic, financial, scientific, or other data-intensive application environments is highly beneficial.
- Experience supporting recurring production systems with strict release schedules is advantageous.
- Knowledge of software configuration management tools and industry best practices.
- Familiarity with formal specifications, accepted software-design techniques, and Computer-Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools is desirable.
- Experience utilizing AI tools or coding assistants in a controlled development environment is a plus.
