Job Title: Tribal Transportation/Roads Director

Position Summary:

The Tribal Transportation Director is responsible for planning, developing, and managing the Tribe’s Transportation Department, including oversight of all transportation-related programs, operations, grants, and budgets. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and tribal regulations and works closely with tribal leadership, community members, and enterprises to support transportation infrastructure and services. The Director will play a key role in expanding, improving, and reconstructing roads and transportation systems within tribal lands to promote safety, accessibility, and economic development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Establish, manage, and oversee the Tribal Transportation Department, including staff supervision, program development, and operational planning.
• Administer and monitor transportation-related grants and funding sources; ensure timely reporting, compliance, and effective use of funds.
• Develop and manage the department’s annual budget; track expenditures and prepare financial and programmatic reports.
• Collaborate with federal, state, county, and tribal agencies to secure funding opportunities and coordinate infrastructure projects.
• Oversee the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads, bridges, and related infrastructure on tribal lands.
• Ensure compliance with the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) and other applicable federal and state regulations.
• Conduct transportation studies, traffic assessments, and long-term planning to support community growth and enterprise needs.
• Develop and implement policies and procedures for safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation services.
• Represent the Tribe in regional and national transportation planning meetings, conferences, and committees.
• Provide technical guidance and recommendations to tribal leadership on transportation priorities and infrastructure development.
• Engage with community members to assess transportation needs and incorporate feedback into planning.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by Tribal Administration or Tribal Council.

Qualifications:

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Transportation Planning, or a related field preferred.
• Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in transportation planning, infrastructure development, or public works management.
• Demonstrated experience with grant writing, administration, and compliance, particularly with federal transportation programs.
• Strong knowledge of roadway design, construction, and maintenance practices.
• Budget development and financial management experience required.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to prepare reports and present information effectively.
• Knowledge of tribal government operations and sensitivity to tribal culture and community values preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license
• Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $36.00 - $39.00 per hour
