Job Summary

The Rackham Aspiring Fellows (RAF) Program is a year-long undergraduate research and graduate pathway program that partners University of Michigan faculty with faculty at partner institutions to provide undergraduate students with meaningful research experiences, mentorship, and professional development. The program aims to strengthen pathways to graduate education through sustained mentorship and institutional collaboration.

Graduate Student Mentors (GSMs) serve as an important part of the RAF mentorship team by providing peer mentorship, graduate school guidance, and professional encouragement throughout the program year. Working alongside faculty mentors and Rackham staff, Graduate Student Mentors help student participants navigate research experiences, explore graduate education opportunities, and build confidence as emerging scholars.

Graduate Student Mentors are matched with RAF student participants based on shared academic interests whenever possible and are expected to maintain consistent communication and engagement throughout the program year.

Please Note: Some evening or occasional weekend availability may be required for program events and campus visits.

Responsibilities*

• Meet with an assigned RAF student participant at least once each month throughout the program year.
• Provide mentorship and guidance related to undergraduate research, graduate education, professional development, and navigating academic life.
• Serve as an approachable and supportive peer mentor while encouraging students' academic and professional growth.
• Connect student participants with campus resources, professional opportunities, and academic networks when appropriate.
• Maintain regular communication with Rackham staff regarding participant engagement and any support needs.
• Participate in mentor onboarding, required trainings, and periodic mentor meetings.
• Attend RAF campus visits and major program events, including the Summer Visit, Fall Visit, and Spring Research Symposium.
• Support student engagement during workshops, networking events, and cohort activities as requested.
• Foster a welcoming and encouraging environment that promotes student success and confidence.

Required Qualifications*

• Current graduate student enrolled in a Rackham Graduate School degree program.
• Good academic standing throughout the appointment period.
• Interest in mentoring undergraduate students and supporting pathways to graduate education.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining consistent communication with program staff.
• Reliable, organized, and committed to following through on mentoring responsibilities.
• Previous mentoring, teaching, research, leadership, or student organization experience is preferred but not required.

Modes of Work
