Assumes responsibility for the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of sterile and non-sterile medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment used in patient care. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, supports the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care by ensuring instruments and supplies are processed in accordance with established policies, procedures, infection prevention standards, and regulatory requirements. This position also assists with unit operations and collaborates with the healthcare team to promote efficient patient care and a safe environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare, process, sterilize, and distribute medical/surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment using established standards and procedures.
• Operate autoclaves and other sterilization equipment, performing biological and quality assurance testing to verify sterilization effectiveness.
• Inspect, assemble, package, label, and store sterile supplies to maintain inventory readiness.
• Issue supplies and equipment needed for patient care in a timely and accurate manner.
• Assist with patient care activities as assigned and within the scope of training, hospital policies, and accepted standards of practice.
• Maintain effective communication with Registered Nurses, charge nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team.
• Participate in patient care planning, team conferences, and shift reports as appropriate.
• Order, receive, stock, and maintain established par levels of supplies and equipment specific to the Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit.
• Assist with unit support functions, including answering telephones and call lights, distributing meals, performing environmental tasks, and completing other assigned duties.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in accordance with infection prevention and safety standards.
• Participate in continuing education, competency validation, and staff development activities.
• Demonstrate professionalism and serve as a role model by promoting the organization's mission, values, and standards of operational excellence.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.

Education

• High school diploma or GED required; graduate of an accredited surgical technology program preferred.

Training

• Minimum of six (6) months of on-the-job training required for non-certified candidates.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Demonstrates competency in required job skills and successfully completes departmental competency assessments.
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods while performing the essential functions of the position.
• Ability to maintain strict adherence to infection prevention, safety, and sterilization standards.

Certifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential preferred.
