We are seeking an experienced Roadway Project Manager (PE) to join our Columbus, Ohio team. This position is ideal for a licensed Professional Engineer with 10+ years of roadway transportation engineering experience who is passionate about leading projects, developing client relationships, and mentoring engineering staff.
The Roadway Project Manager will oversee the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects for ODOT, counties, the City of Columbus, and local municipalities. This individual will serve as the primary client contact, manage project budgets and schedules, provide technical leadership, and ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management
- Manage roadway transportation projects from proposal through final construction plans.
- Develop project scopes, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans.
- Monitor project progress, budgets, and profitability.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client expectations.
- Lead project meetings and coordinate multidisciplinary project teams.
- Manage subconsultants and coordinate with outside agencies and utility companies.
- Oversee quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) throughout project development.
Engineering & Technical Leadership
Provide technical oversight and direction for roadway improvement projects, including:
- Roadway widening and reconstruction
- Roundabouts and intersection improvements
- Roadway realignments
- New subdivision roadway infrastructure
Oversee and review:
- Drainage and stormwater design
- Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis
- Utility coordination and relocation design
- Waterline and sanitary sewer design
- Highway lighting design
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans
- Quantity calculations
- Engineer's cost estimates
- Construction plans and specifications
Serve as Engineer of Record when applicable.
Client & Business Development
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients including ODOT, City of Columbus, counties, townships, and local municipalities.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through responsive communication and exceptional service.
- Participate in project interviews and proposal development.
- Identify opportunities for repeat work and new business.
- Represent the firm at client meetings, public meetings, and industry events.
Leadership & Mentoring
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, designers, and technical staff.
- Provide technical guidance and project oversight.
- Review engineering work for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Foster collaboration and professional growth within the transportation team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio (or ability to obtain Ohio licensure through reciprocity).
- 10+ years of roadway/transportation engineering experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing transportation projects from planning through final design.
- Strong working knowledge of ODOT design standards and project development process.
- Experience with City of Columbus, county, and local municipality standards.
- Proficiency in:
- AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation OpenRoads Designer
- Experience with drainage and hydraulic software (e.g., HEC-RAS, HydroCAD) is preferred.
- Strong understanding of:
- Roadway geometrics
- Drainage design
- Utility coordination
- Maintenance of Traffic (MOT)
- Cost estimating
- Construction plan preparation
Preferred Experience
- Successful management of multiple roadway transportation projects simultaneously.
- Experience serving as Project Manager on ODOT and municipal transportation projects.
- Familiarity with ODOT Local Public Agency (LPA) projects.
- Experience preparing proposals, fee estimates, and project work plans.
- Business development and client relationship management experience.
- Proven ability to mentor and lead engineering teams.
- Experience presenting to clients, public agencies, and stakeholders.
