The school systems of Chesapeake, Franklin, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Southampton, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach established the Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs (SECEP), with financial assistance from the Virginia Department of Education.
SECEP provides a formal structure through which participating school divisions plan and operate educational programs for students with special needs. SECEP is a public body established in accordance with the Code of Virginia, providing for the establishment and operation of jointly owned schools.
Position Title: Middle/High School History Teacher
Nature of Position:
The Middle/High School History Teacher provides engaging, standards-based instruction in history and social sciences to students in grades 6–12, as assigned. Courses may include Virginia Studies, United States History, Virginia and United States Government, World History, World Geography, Civics and Economics, or other history/social science courses aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).
This position requires specialized teaching performed in a classroom setting. The teacher is directly responsible to the principal or his/her designee.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The History Teacher:
Instructs students in history and social science content aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) and adheres to all policies and procedures established by SECEP and participating school divisions.
Plans and delivers engaging, student-centered lessons that promote historical inquiry, critical thinking, civic responsibility, and analysis of primary and secondary source documents.
Creates an inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation through discussions, collaborative learning, simulations, debates, research projects, presentations, and technology-enhanced instruction.
Uses instructional strategies that promote historical analysis, geographic reasoning, economic understanding, and responsible citizenship.
Integrates instructional technology, digital resources, and multimedia tools to enhance student learning and engagement.
Differentiates instruction to meet the diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of students, including students with disabilities and varied learning styles.
Provides individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction to maximize student achievement and accommodate diverse learning needs.
Develops and administers a variety of formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress and measure mastery of curriculum objectives.
Uses assessment data to inform instructional decisions, provide targeted interventions, and improve student performance.
Establishes and maintains high standards of student behavior that foster a safe, respectful, and productive classroom environment.
Maintains accurate records of attendance, grades, student progress, and other required documentation in accordance with division policies.
Selects, organizes, and maintains instructional materials, textbooks, classroom resources, and technology necessary to support instruction.
Ensures the responsible use and care of classroom materials, instructional technology, and school property.
Collaborates with special education staff, school counselors, administrators, instructional specialists, and other professionals to support student success.
Maintains ongoing communication with parents and guardians regarding student achievement, behavior, attendance, and educational progress.
Supervises students during instructional and assigned non-instructional activities, including field trips, assemblies, lunch duty, bus duty, and other assigned responsibilities.
Sponsors or supports extracurricular activities, student organizations, academic competitions, or school events, as assigned.
Participates in curriculum development, instructional planning, data analysis, and school improvement initiatives.
Participates cooperatively in the teacher evaluation process in accordance with division policies and state regulations.
Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.
Professional Responsibilities
The History Teacher:
Maintains professional competence through participation in division-sponsored professional development and self-directed learning opportunities.
Stays current on developments in history education, instructional technology, culturally responsive teaching practices, and educational research.
Demonstrates professionalism, ethical conduct, confidentiality, and compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Participates in faculty meetings, professional learning communities (PLCs), committees, and other collaborative activities.
Supports school initiatives designed to improve student achievement, school culture, attendance, and graduation outcomes.
Contributes positively to the school community through collaboration, effective communication, and continuous professional growth.
Serves on committees addressing instructional and non-instructional matters such as curriculum, school improvement, discipline, student recognition, and accreditation.
Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations related to history and social science education, when appropriate.
