JOB SUMMARY:

The school principal is the instructional leader of the school and responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the implementation of all school activities including safety, climate, curriculum, instruction, student support, and finance. This position requires a commitment to racial equity, as well as other forms of education equity around class, ability, language, gender, and sexuality.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as instructional leaders

Maintains a strong, safe, and supportive school climate that is conducive to learning

Leads day-to-day operations within the school

Maintains fidelity to the supervisory union and school continuous improvement plan, and making decisions with consideration for system priorities and initiatives

Provides supervision and evaluation of staff, for the purpose of improving teaching and learning

Uses data to inform decision-making based upon what is best for students (as opposed to adults)

Articulates progress and the well-being of school and students to the school community

Developes building specific policies and practices that support the educational mission of the school and district

Facilitates the development, articulation, and implementation of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by all stakeholders

Promotes the success of every student by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth

Facilitates the coordination and management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment

Collaborates with faculty and staff, principal colleagues, and central office staff

Responds to diverse community interests and needs, while leveraging community resources

Acts with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner

Responds to the political, social, economical, legal and cultural context of school administration

Prepares and administers the school budget and supervises school finances

Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration

Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school’s staff and students

Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline through positive behavior interventions and supports, and progressive discipline

Supervises all professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and non-professional personnel attached to the school

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. In addition to the following:

Education/ Experience:Possess an earned graduate degree; has a minimum of 3 or more years experience as teacher/leader; 2 years of school administrator experience preferred.

Certification and Licenses: Possess or be eligible for licensure as a PreK-12 principal in Vermont; Possession of a valid driver’s license; Fingerprint/criminal justice clearance.

Language Skills: Must have strong communication, computer, and interpersonal skills. Have the ability to learn and utilize new software programs as systems upgrade. Must have above average typing skills (55 wpm). Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to develop and write routine and complex reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with employees, the greater school community, and general public.

Mathematical/Reasoning Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, areas, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, and schedule form. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information presented in various formats.

Computer Skills and Experience: Training and/or experience in using Microsoft Office, Google Suite (email, calendar, docs, sheets), student information systems, grading systems, assessment systems, and computerized filing systems preferred. Have the ability to learn and utilize new software programs as systems upgrade.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Must be able to keep high levels of confidentiality in all aspects of job performance. Ability to perform duties and awareness of all School District requirements and Board policies.Has demonstrated experience successfully supporting diverse students, including students of color, English Language Learners, and LGBTQ+ students.

Administrative Contracts are issued according to the terms stated in the contract. Any unique terms (e.g. one year, nonrenewable contracts, contacts issued after a waiver is approved by the state, multi-year contracts, etc.) will be stated in the individual contract.
