Senior Network Engineer
Location: Billings, Montana — onsite, with travel to client sites as needed
About the Role
We're a small, high-end technology consulting firm, and this is a senior role that combines deep hands-on engineering with technical leadership. You'll own the design, implementation, and security of network infrastructure across multiple client environments while guiding a team of engineers and setting the standard for quality, documentation, and client communication.
This is not a maintain-the-status-quo position. You'll assess risk, design secure and scalable architectures, lead initiatives from strategy through execution, and mentor the people around you. Because we're a consulting firm, how we serve clients matters as much as the technical solution — you'll be expected to explain complex topics clearly to technical and business stakeholders alike, and to earn trust through follow-through.
What You'll Do
- Design, implement, and support LAN, WLAN, WAN, VPN, firewall, and cloud network architectures across client environments.
- Lead network segmentation, perimeter security, access control, and secure cloud connectivity initiatives.
- Configure and tune routing and switching at depth — OSPF/BGP/EIGRP, STP, VLANs and trunking, EtherChannel, subnetting, and route/policy design.
- Build and maintain firewall rule sets, authentication and NAC controls, and segmentation strategies that reduce risk and improve resilience.
- Investigate security alerts, vulnerabilities, and potential breaches; recommend and implement remediation.
- Monitor and support firewalls, endpoint protection, web/URL filtering, and related defense platforms.
- Troubleshoot network and security issues spanning hardware, configuration, and connectivity.
- Provide technical direction to the team — design reviews, troubleshooting decisions, and architecture choices.
- Coach and mentor engineers through technical challenges, client work, and professional growth.
- Create and maintain SOPs, documentation, status reports, and security findings.
- Support compliance and governance efforts (security policies, ISMS, regulatory expectations).
What We're Looking For
A senior engineer with the judgment to operate independently, the communication skills to lead client-facing work, and the instinct to develop the people around them. You should be comfortable owning technical direction and accountable for outcomes.
Required
- 5+ years designing, implementing, and maintaining production network and security solutions.
- Strong routing, switching, LAN/WAN, wireless, and subnetting fundamentals — CCNP-level depth.
- Advanced grasp of network security architecture and best practices.
- Hands-on experience with firewalls, URL filtering, endpoint protection, web security gateways, and network access controls.
- Experience investigating security alerts, vulnerabilities, and breaches.
- Experience providing technical direction, mentoring, or leadership to other engineers.
- Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Willingness to travel onsite to client locations when needed.
Preferred
- CCNP or CCIE certification.
- Expert-level experience with one or more of: Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, UniFi, Meraki, MikroTik, Ruckus.
- Cloud networking, automation, API, and scripting experience.
Why This Role Matters
In a small firm, every engineer has real impact. You'll shape client environments, influence major technical decisions, and help build the team itself through coaching and technical leadership. We're looking for someone who wants more than a routine engineering job — a senior engineer and people leader who takes pride in excellent work and enjoys helping clients and teammates succeed.
If that's you, we'd be glad to meet you.
