Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller oversees the organization's accounting and financial operations while ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. As a key financial leader, this position provides accurate financial reporting, strengthens internal controls, develops the accounting team, and partners with executive leadership to support informed business decisions.

Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for leading the organization's accounting and financial operations while ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulatory requirements. This position oversees all day-to-day accounting functions, financial reporting, internal controls, audits, budgeting support, and financial process improvement.
Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller serves as a strategic business partner by providing financial insight, supporting organizational planning, and ensuring responsible stewardship of the organization's financial resources.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Accounting Operations
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team while fostering accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, fixed assets, and cash management.
- Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes while ensuring timely and accurate reporting.
- Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Establish, monitor, and strengthen internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
- Coordinate the annual financial statement audit and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting requirements, including nonprofit accounting regulations.
- Develop, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and financial processes.
Strategic Financial Partnership
- Partner with the CFO on annual budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and organizational planning.
- Monitor cash flow and provide recommendations that support sound financial decision-making.
- Provide meaningful financial analysis and reporting to executive leadership.
- Support strategic initiatives through financial modeling and operational analysis.
Risk Management & Organizational Stewardship
- Partner with the CFO in managing the organization's commercial insurance program, including annual renewals and risk management initiatives.
- Collaborate with organizational leaders to promote responsible financial stewardship.
- Identify opportunities to improve financial efficiency, reporting accuracy, and operational effectiveness.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Progressive accounting experience including financial reporting, general ledger management, month-end closing, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing accounting professionals.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and financial/accounting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- NetSuite experience.
- Previous nonprofit accounting experience.
