Job Overview
We're looking for someone who is passionate about skincare, curious about cosmetic science, and eager to build a career in formulation.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working hands-on in the lab, solving problems, and learning how skincare products are developed from concept through production. You'll work alongside our Research & Development Scientist to learn formulation techniques while supporting ingredient qualification, product development, quality investigations, and laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Support the development of innovative skincare products from concept through commercialization.
- Prepare compounding laboratory batches by accurately following existing formulations.
- Prepare stock solutions, ingredient premixes, and laboratory materials for development projects.
- Assist with compounding laboratory batches and evaluating finished products for texture, viscosity, fragrance, appearance, and overall performance.
- Work with Compounding to optimize product processing.
- Assist with modifying existing formulations to create new product concepts.
- Validate and qualify alternate raw material suppliers.
- Research and source innovative raw materials and build relationships with ingredient suppliers to stay informed on emerging technologies and innovations.
- Assist the internal buyer in purchasing raw materials.
- Support raw material qualification and maintain associated documentation.
- Perform or coordinate microbiological testing and maintain testing records.
- Cross-train in stability testing, maintain stability programs, and evaluate ongoing stability samples.
- Create final product specifications and ensure formulation changes are accurately documented in internal systems.
- Support and participate in quality investigations, including root cause analysis, formulation troubleshooting, and corrective action implementation, as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Cosmetic Science, Biology, or a related scientific discipline.
- 1–3 years of laboratory experience preferred (internships or university research considered).
- Passion for skincare and cosmetic formulation.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent laboratory practices.
- Comfortable following detailed procedures while also thinking critically about results.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with laboratory equipment preferred.
- Familiarity with cosmetic ingredients or formulation is a plus but not required.
- Must live within commuting distance of South Portland, Maine or be willing to relocate.
This role is intentionally designed as a career development position.
You'll receive hands-on mentoring in cosmetic formulation, raw material functionality, stability evaluation, manufacturing scale-up, ingredient sourcing, and product troubleshooting. As your technical skills grow, you'll take on increasing responsibility for developing and optimizing formulations with the long-term goal of advancing into a Research & Development Scientist (Formulation Scientist) role.
Pay: $60,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
