The Product Development Engineer is primarily responsible for initiating, developing, and finalizing products specific to customer needs. Product development may be based on current manufacturing capabilities or on a ‘greenfield’ basis requiring capital equipment expenses. This position reports to the Director of Technical & Site Services and is based at the JCI Columbus, Ohio location.
Responsibilities:
Developmental Responsibilities:
- Develop and prepare formulations for new products and provide oversight to Laboratory Staff in the testing and validation of these products in conjunction with the Senior Product Development Engineer. In some cases, it will require development of test methods when standard methods do not exist to test these products.
- Understand various government standards impacting Jacobi’s products including, but not limited to, USA (42 CFR Part 84, MIL-DTL-32101, AWWA, NSF), EU (EN 14387) and Australia/New Zealand (AS/NZS 1716). Oversee testing on existing and new products to determine compliance with these standards.
- Analyze test data and provide written reports to Management and other Jacobi staff regarding product development efforts.
- Follow good laboratory practices, safety precautions, and PPE requirements, as specified per SDS/MSDS or company policy with respect to operation of Jacobi’s laboratories.
- Identify and bring forward for consideration both new product development opportunities and improvement of existing materials to seek performance or commercial augmentations.
Operations / Quality Assurance / Local Facility Support Responsibilities:
- Identify and develop improvements to existing Jacobi produced products at any manufacturing location to meet performance or commercial specifications.
- Create and edit SOPs on existing and new products for review by the Production Team and costing by the Finance Team.
- Coordinate production trials on product improvements with Production Team.
- Advise personnel on industrial safety and health requirements and issues, including hazardous chemical exposure levels, and recommend improvements.
- Develop Control Plans, FMEA’s, etc. in coordination with Production teams and QEHS teams for existing and new product grades.
Product Management / Application Support / Technical Service Responsibilities:
- Answer technical support and designated application questions from Sales, Production, and Sourcing Teams, or directly from customers, providing appropriate output meeting the positive goals of the organization.
- Coordinate laboratory testing and analysis on products in response to customer operational problems or complaints.
- Develop a close understanding of a designated product line and act as the custodian in product stewardship of those materials. Responsibility extends to maintenance of the specific product catalogue, product documentation, regulatory matters, and definition of specifications.
- Performs assignments as requested by Technical Director, National Sales Manager, President of JCI or other Top Management.
- Represent JCI with ASTM, AWWA, ASHRAE and other technical bodies.
- Occasional domestic and international travel for work-related purposes (e.g., customer meetings, site visits, conferences, training, workshops) up to approximately 15% of working time.
Previous Work & Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or similar discipline.
- 3-5 years of working with activated carbon, minimum.
- Proficiency with MS Office products and statistical analysis software required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Possesses strong organizational and time management skills.

- Collaborative team player with a positive attitude.
- Professional interaction with coworkers, management, customers, and vendors.
