Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Research Associate SR. is responsible for assigned activities in the research laboratory under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator or the designee of P.I. They will perform experiments in the area of cell and molecular biology, molecular virology, and immunology relating to HIV and tuberculosis infection. The postdoctoral research associate should have extensive expertise in immunology and infectious diseases and has experience in the handling of small animals. This Postdoctoral Research Associate position is immediately available to develop an immunotherapy to treat HIV/Mtb co-infection. In addition, the prospective candidate will also participate in a phage therapy project that aims to develop a cure for multi-drug resistant Mtb infection.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

• Lead the NIH-funded research project focusing on developing immunotherapy treatments for the treatment of HIV and tuberculosis co-infection and testing the therapy efficacy in humanized mouse model.
• Participate in a phage therapy project for the treatment of Mtb infection. The duties will include, but not limited to: Testing the phage therapy efficacy in humanized mouse model, characterizing the immune responses, safety, toxicity and biodistribution in humanized mice.
• HIV gene therapy: depending on the interest and expertise, the postdoc may be involved in developing gene editing materials in vivo in humanized mouse model for HIV gene therapy.
• General laboratory support duties—Maintenance of cell cultures, Mtb cultures, Isolation of RNA, polymerase chain reactions, preparation of DNAs including plasmid DNA, cell transfections, primary T cell isolation, electroporation, enzyme assays, protein production, etc.
• Generating and characterizing humanized mice, and conducting experiments by using these humanized mice, such as bleeding the animals, tail-vein injection, etc.
• Ordering and maintaining supplies, equipment maintenance, and general upkeep of the laboratory.
• Conducting or assisting in experiments related to other ongoing research projects under PI’s supervision.
• Documentation of experimental data in timely fashion.
• Inventory and ordering of laboratory supplies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience

• Ph.D. Three (3) years expertise in immunology, virology, and microbiology.
• Three (3) years expertise in using multicolor flow cytometry and in handling small animals (e.g., tail-vein injection and retro-orbital bleeding techniques, etc.).

Preferred Education / Experience:

• Experience working on generating humanized mouse models.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
