Job Summary

The Research Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and testing aerial and ground robots for real-time experimental setups and implementing advanced models for data analysis. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of agricultural technology, hardware prototyping, and data-driven research.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

• Design, assemble, and test aerial and ground robots for experimental agricultural research.
• Develop, implement, and optimize data models for processing and analyzing collected field and laboratory data.
• Collaborate closely with researchers to ensure hardware and data workflows align with experimental goals.
• Document hardware designs, experimental procedures, data processing methods, and findings comprehensively.
• Troubleshoot hardware and software issues and contribute to system improvements.
• Analyzing, implementing, and testing the materials developed in a research lab.
• Participate in technical discussions to support project innovation and performance enhancement.
• Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or a closely related field. Or, a Bachelor's degree with near completion of a Master’s degree in Engineering or related field.
• Hands-on experience with hardware prototyping, electronics, embedded systems, or IoT devices.
• Proficiency in data analysis and modeling using tools such as Python, R, or MATLAB

Preferred Education/Experience

• Background in robotics, agricultural automation, remote sensing, or machine learning.
• FAA Part 107 license to pilot the drones.
• Familiarity with data analytics workflows and model deployment.
• ROS, C# and C++ programming skills.
• Knowledge of various aspects of drone applications in agriculture including UAV types, sensors, regulations, power systems, communication technologies, and image processing algorithms.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
