East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) was founded in 1958 by a community leader whose love of reading and dedication to the children of East Harlem inspired her to start a volunteer-run reading group in her living room. Since then, EHTP has evolved from a tutoring program into a multi-site, multi-dimensional educational organization that will serve over 1,600 Pre-K through college students this year. Its offerings include after-school and summer programs, a network of public charter schools, the College Scholars program, and the East Harlem Teaching Residency and Fellowship. Today, EHTP is recognized as a leader among organizations advancing educational outcomes and as a committed advocate for racial equity on a national scale.

Our story started in 1957 with two determined parents, Dr. and Mrs. Charles E. Jordan. When no school in the country could serve their daughter Judith Ann, who had multiple disabilities, they created one themselves. That school—founded in a modest house in Springfield, Illinois—became Hope.
Their act of love sparked more than a local solution. It ignited a national conversation. The work of Hope soon gained the attention of President John F. Kennedy, who appointed Dr. Jordan to the President’s Council on Disabilities. At a time when few resources existed for people with disabilities, Hope helped shape policies and services that would transform lives across the country.
Illinois became a leader in disability advocacy, and Hope stood at the center of that change—proving that compassion and commitment can reshape an entire system.
