They should include it in markdown item prior to destruction. So much food in code goes into trash when it can be purchased by employees and donated to shelters while it is still in code. They pull food 60-90 days prior to expiration because they are fearful of being sued.

Regular customers can earn the same discount with their loyalty card. Even the "Employee Appreciation Days" where they up the discount to 30% is now given to the top tier of loyalty card holders. You receive coupons to share with friends and family to earn the employee discount for a day - but largely this feels like a ploy to earn more sales as many stores opt to give out these coupons to random customers because they send far more of these coupons than there are staff members.
