The military transitioned to a blended retirement system which provides matching funds of up to 5% into a soldier's Thrift Savings Plan (similar to 401k). The TSP is able to transfer to other retirement savings accounts upon separation and does not have a vested period. For those who choose to retire after 20 years of service, a full life-long retirement becomes available in addition to the TSP.
