      Data Scientist Interview

      Sep 11, 2020
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through other source. I interviewed at 6sense (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2020

      Interview

I had a fairly unique interview experience at 6sense. I actually found out about 6sense through a friend who was leaving to go to a new opportunity. My friend left on good terms and referred me on their way out. I was put in touch with a member of the data science team, and we had a casual chat about the role before submitting my resume. They provided a standard take-home challenge with 48 hours to complete. I decided to start on Friday afternoon not thinking about what I'd do if/when I had questions about the assignment (the whole team is super responsive and would have answered any questions I asked over the weekend, I just didn't think to). There were a few things I was confused about in the assignment and I ended up filtering the data quite a bit and ultimately got pretty odd results. After submitting the results for the take-home, I got an email saying I wouldn't be moving forward in the application process. I was bummed but wasn't too surprised; I realized I did some weird stuff in the take-home. I reached out to the person I was referred to and asked about where I was lacking (they said the take-home, unsurprisingly). We went back and forth with maybe a dozen emails where I explained my reasoning. After that, they took a closer look at my code and decided to invite me for an on-site! (Note that this is the only time I've ever heard of a company changing their mind about a candidate from a 'no' to a 'yes' based on a discussion with that candidate and I think it speaks to the level of openness, understanding, and, most fundamentally, the curiosity that I've come to expect here). The onsite was a standard super-day. They gave a challenge similar to the take-home on which I gave a presentation to the DS team (the CTO even came and was highly engaged throughout). I also met and had lunch with members of the data science and data analyst teams, coffee with the data analytics manager, whiteboarded sql, etc.

      Interview

Recruiter reached out for an exploratory call twice but never called. Would have been nice to at least know if the position was filled. I don’t appreciate setting time aside during a busy work day only to be ghosted twice.
