Firstly I think it's important to mention that their only assessment centre is held in Bolton. Bear in mind they pay nothing towards travel expenses so this will have to be funded by yourself. I first entered the Aldi building and met with 7 other people. The interviewer collects everyone and takes you to a room where you sit behind your name tag. You are then asked to introduce yourself by stating your name, university, any societies you're in and what your favourite Aldi product is and why. Prior to the interview you are asked to visit your local Aldi store and partake in a "store walk". So the first half of the assessment is to give a 3 minute presentation on a topic that the interviewer gives you. You get to pick the topic by choosing a number between 1-8. My topic was about Marketing and PR. I don't remember all the topics but some of the others included: special buys, the simplicity of Aldi, Brexit. Everyone had to present their presentations with 10 mins to prepare, if you were to go over the allocated 3 minutes you'd be cut off. You'd then be asked a question about your presentation. We then got a 15 minute break to chat with the other candidates. After the break we returned and the next task consisted of 5 CVs and a job description, we had to individually decide which candidate was most appropriate for the job role and then we had 1 minute to explain our reasons, each candidate had key skills and flaws. After this we had 20 minutes as a group to choose one particular candidate. This bit was frustrating as everyone kept trying to speak over you and speak louder. It was difficult to get a word in edgeways so I'd advise you to be prepared for this. The interviewer will then hand everyone another CV to sway your decision. After the group had agreed on one candidate, we had to explain why to the interviewer. The interviewer will then dispute your chosen candidate and argue that you've picked the wrong one. (They'll do this with whoever you choose) and you'll be asked at the end if you want to stay with your chosen candidate. After this task concluded, we were told the assessment had finished. We were told to ask questions about either the job role or the company in general. Everyone else asked about the job role but I asked about the future plans of Aldi and if they had any plans regarding Sustainability and the expansion of vegan/vegetarian products. I felt this point was slightly unfair as everyone else had a detailed explanation to their questions but I was told to look on the website. The assessment day concluded having lasted nearly 3 hours. I wasn't successful and the email states that they're unable to give feedback due to a high number of applications, I think this is ridiculous as I had to spend a large amount of money on train fares and taxi fares to even attend, so they should at least give feedback. Although this placement does pay well, the work hours seem very demanding so my advice would be to make sure you know what you're letting yourself in for!
