Extremely disrespectful and disorganized interview process! I had one of the most frustrating and disrespectful candidate experiences I have encountered in a professional hiring process. After an extensive two-day onsite consisting of a research presentation and 15 one-on-one and two-on-one interviews (each lasting 45–60 minutes), I was explicitly told by the hiring manager to communicate any competing opportunities so the hiring process could be accelerated if necessary. The recruiter later proactively asked about my timeline, and I clearly explained that I was considering another opportunity and that the Allen Institute was my top choice. I was then asked to provide 3 professional references. I immediately contacted senior references, obtained their permission, gave them a heads-up that the Allen Institute might reach out, and promptly provided their contact information. My references were never contacted. After waiting, I followed up directly about the reference process. I was told that the hiring manager was “still working on speaking with them” and that the recruiter was “trying to speed this along as quickly as possible.” The recruiter specifically asked me to provide a deadline if I needed to hear back because of other opportunities. I did exactly what I was asked to do. I clearly communicated my decision deadline and explained that, without a meaningful update by the end of that week, I would unfortunately need to move forward with another opportunity. No response. To be clear, rejection is a normal part of interviewing. Candidates understand that organizations compare finalists and that hiring decisions take time. What is unacceptable is asking a candidate to invest two full days in an onsite, proactively asking about competing timelines, requesting that the candidate contact senior professors—each considerably more senior than the hiring manager—and prepare them for reference checks, telling the candidate that the hiring manager is working on speaking with those references when they have not been contacted, explicitly asking the candidate for a decision deadline, and then failing to acknowledge that deadline at all. A basic two-sentence email saying, “We cannot provide a decision by your deadline” would have been enough. Apparently, even that was too much to expect. For an organization that emphasizes collaboration and professional culture, this experience left me with serious concerns about its internal communication, organization, and basic respect for candidates' time. A hiring process is often a candidate's first sustained exposure to how an institution coordinates internally and treats people when it holds the leverage. Based on this experience, the impression was extremely poor. I would not recommend applying to the Allen Institute, and I certainly would not recommend putting other opportunities on hold for them. After investing this much time in their interview process, I came away genuinely relieved that I had other options. If this candidate experience is representative of how the organization communicates and operates internally, I would have serious reservations about working there at all. One of the worst hiring experiences I have had. I would not apply again.
