I emailed my CV to Amazon DC in Edinburgh and the in-house recruiter got back to me and arranged a chat. After chatting with her about my background and reasons for applying she sent me the coding test link for the next stage. I had 7 days to complete the test in, but once I had started, it had a 1 hour time limit. I completed this about 4 days later, after some quick preparation for the possible questions which may come up. The test link has an example question, too. The test was a fairly easy question. Once I had submitted this it took them about 3 weeks to get back to me with the results. I had to email them to see if they had forgotten as it had been so long and there is a 1 month time limit on the coding test platform! This was a little strange as many people would not wait that long, but eventually I heard back and thankfully I passed, so was invited to have a phone interview. This was not technical in my case, although was with a technical lead. I passed this, too, and was invited to the office in Edinburgh. Annoyingly, the next free interview date was 3 days later! I would otherwise have to wait a month which seemed too long. I would have liked to have had more preparation time, but it's life - fine. Amazon arranged the flights and accommodation for me to go up there. I flew in the morning and was interviewed from about 2pm to 6:30pm. There were several people who interviewed me, most covering technical topics. I felt this went okay, but could have been better as I could see the limits of my technical knowledge and felt frustrated that there was no real way to show that I can learn to do these things if given time to research. This is why I feel that I didn't get the job in the end, and I agree with the outcome as I need more experience before going into such a role. The feedback is poor - honestly this isn't down to the recruiter as she obviously hadn't been given much back, but it is a little annoying. The reason of Amazon US having a policy of not giving feedback is a ridiculous excuse! I almost laughed when I heard that. But anyway - this is not what really irked me. What pushed this from a good experience overall to a bad one was that I went to the pre-booked hotel, only to find that the card on the system hadn't been authorised to make the payment! I had to pay for it which I am thankfully able to do. Errors happen and I was annoyed, but reasoned that I could just claim it back, which I did. However, it took over one month for the money to be reimbursed! What if I couldn't afford to not have this money, especially over the Christmas period?? It was over £120 by the time the other expenses had been added on. This really got to me as I had to ask a couple of times after the money. I was left wondering about their company ethics if they cannot even reimburse job-hunters in good time... I feel like I need to make a point about this - really, it was fine for me; just an annoyance - but for someone else this could leave them in difficulty. Totally unacceptable!
