The recruitment process is great in terms of structure - it is simple, quick, and very well organized. Unfortunately, the interview part (arguably the most important...) is where they seem to have cut some corners.
The idea of having an actual area manager conducting the interview sounds great in theory. However, not all individuals are suitable to interview candidates - and this was explicitly shown during my interview. After passing the online assessment, I was invited to 2 video interviews. During the first one, the interviewer told me he had worked there for just over a year. He didn’t exactly sell me on the position - even used the word “miserable“ once in describing it before quickly correcting himself. He was rude and unprofessional in my opinion. He stated how he had little to no time for this interview because he was so busy. The interview felt rushed at this point. He didn’t seem to be listening to my answers either. He was so fixated on the use of the STAR method, that he was overlooking what I was telling him just to be able to jot down the specific STAR element on the worksheet in front of him. Think of when the teacher gives you a worksheet filled with questions alongside a video to watch in class - are you actively listening or just listening to jot down the answers? He strongly lacked interviewing skills, in my opinion. I felt “grilled”.
The second interview began off to an awkward start. I had began to turn my webcam on when the interviewer informed me they wouldn’t be turning theirs on... okay. He verbally speed read me a case study, and then quickly proceeded to ask questions. The case study wasn’t in front of me - but hey, it would have been useful to screen share for instance, especially since they use the most arbitrary names in it. He too would ask me to reiterate specifics on the STAR method, such as the R (result) for instance. If he was listening to my answer, he would know what the solution was - hence, the explanation in my answer. Just because I didn’t say “and this was the RESULT” doesn’t mean I didn’t answer the question thoroughly. I was also asked an “off the record” question that was very much on the record... it was Why Amazon? Strange.
TLDR: Overall, they’re way too fixated on STAR and they have incompetent people doing the interviewing that lack both listening and interpersonal skills. I assume they receive minimal training for these interviews as well, other than what questions are deemed suitable to ask.
Also, why are shifts 12 hours long for this role? I would love to know the justification for that, because from this standpoint it looks like a way to really work new grads to death.
