First of all, I want to say that I've been to two different airline (in-person) interviews and American's was my favorite because of their genuine excitement to have us there and to get to know us. That being said, here's the process I experienced: A few months ago I submitted an initial resume application and then was asked to continue forward with a personality test. These questions are intended to gauge how you respond in various situations and also whether or not you have the temperament to work in this industry. American Airlines is dedicated to customer service, and that isn't always an easy task given the rocky relationships between passengers and the airline industry these days (especially post-United Airlines' infamous incident). You shouldn't answer any other way than how you honestly feel because these questions are designed to help both you and the airline. By lying or claiming you have certain personality traits that you actually may not possess, you're potentially throwing yourself into an industry that will make you miserable with its customer service demands. Remember, they're looking for people with servant's hearts. People who are compassionate, who go above and beyond, and who genuinely want to be the face of an industry-leading company. After the personality assessment, a video interview is administered. I won't give you the questions because that seems unfair to the competition and, if you're really curious, you can find them in other posts, but I will say that you should have 10 good behavioral responses ready in the STAR format so you can answer comfortably any question thrown at you. Finally, if you make it to the face to face you'll receive a phone call and email from talent services in order to get you set up. At the face to face interview be yourself. If you're the person they're looking for, you'll be chosen. It isn't random. It isn't luck. Especially considering the way the interview is structured, you're going to have several opportunities to interact with multiple different employees of the company who all have a say in whether or not you'll be hired. Remember: Smile, don't stand out for the wrong reasons, and be yourself! If I could give any tips to American Airlines itself about the interview process, it would be this: 1) You should seriously consider changing the interview format and then asking everyone who makes it to the face to face to sign confidentiality waivers. It's so much more difficult to say who made it breezily through the interview process because they already had an unfair advantage of knowing every last detail of it and who made it through because they possess the personality and image your brand is striving for. Confidentiality agreements also help show the exclusivity of the process. You either make it to the face to face and earn a glance into the company's hiring process or you don't. It's exciting. 2) Your training and conference center is beautiful. Seriously. It's far more beautiful than the other legacy carrier's facility that I also interviewed at. But, the rooms that you host the interview in are drab. I know American Airlines is working on improving its culture within the company, but that improvement should also extend to the potential newhires as well. Consider adding couches and mood-lighting instead of cafeteria style tables. And the rooms used for the group interview sessions with just rows of chairs in an otherwise barren room also doesn't present the best image. This is the world's largest airline working on being the world's greatest airline and that should start with potential new hires in an interview process that leaves people experiencing a positive atmosphere. 3) Finally, this isn't a criticism it's actually a compliment. Your friendly, family atmosphere is thoroughly appreciated. You bring southern hospitality to a worldly organization.
