The main interview took place onsite in person, but prior to this I had a panel interview on the phone with all of the directors. At the end of the call I was told the next step in the interview process would be to fly to TO and meet everyone. Once there, the interview itself began at 8 am and continued non-stop until about 3pm. My first meeting was with an HR person who described (in general terms) the benefits package that came with the job. Afterwards, there were meetings with everyone from the division director to ALL the other epidemiology managers (same level, one level above, and the section supervisors). Some meetings were 1:1, in particular the meeting with the person who would serve as direct supervisor. During this meeting, which took place in his office, the job and responsibilities were described. The rest of my meetings were in a small conference room, except for lunch which I shared with two current employees, and my interviews with people in another division, which took place in another building. I was walked from building to building by the admin assistant.
Most of the conversation in the interview had to do with what the division was involved in, in a general sense, and where it would be going. Questions directed at me had to do with the types of projects I was currently involved with and the methods I used to analyze them. I assume because this was an entry level position, I was asked specifically about industry vs academia. I also met with a programmer who asked more standard interview-type questions (e.g., describe a situation where you've had difficulty with a project and how did you resolve it). Throughout, I was given multiple opportunities to ask questions of everyone. Overall, I would say that the general tone was quite relaxed, but extremely professional. I was relaxed but I never forgot that this was an interview. At the end, I was taken back to the person who would supervise the position for a quick wrap-up. I wasthen taken to dinner at a very nice place by some of the senior-level people.
In general, everything from the initial conference call to the flight to the reimbursement for expenses (only for food and a taxi - everything else was pre-paid), was extremely well-managed and smooth. I was lodged in a business class room/suite when I arrived the night before the interview and I had the choice of a car rental or a taxi to make my way from the airport to the hotel. Lastly, the visit also included a tour of the city by a professional relocation company. In fact, I had a marvelous time and enjoyed talking to and was impressed by everyone I spoke with. As I understand it, the job ultimately was offered to someone with broader experience (more diseases, bigger datasets).
