I was contacted and given a design challenge before having an in person interview. I spent a long time doing this design challenge and then was followed up stating that they were impressed and wanted to bring me in for an on site interview. The DAY BEFORE my interview I get a call saying they have cancelled the position?? Not even that they decided to hire another candidate. Okay steal my ideas and other candidate's ideas and then remove the role. This is why design challenges are ridiculous. This company does not value your time at all.

Hi, Thank you for your review and feedback. Unfortunately, sometimes we have to close positions based on unforeseen circumstances. We currently only develop or design mobile applications for clients based on their ideas. The design challenge cannot and has never been used for any other purposes. It is just a tool to evaluate a candidate's skills that are not reflected on their resume.
Your feedback here on Glassdoor is greatly appreciated. We definitely value your time and effort. We would also like all candidates to walk away with a positive experience.
I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at App Partner
Interview
Very strange. I've never experienced an interview like this before. They said sent an automated message that asked me to complete about 6 hours worth of a design challenge to design an app. This is without an initial phone call or explanation. Then when I got on a short call with the HR person (I assume), she had no further insight into the position than what was on the application. Also I mentioned that if I'm spending 6 hours of my time making this presentation, I should at least be able to come in and describe my thought process and decisions. She said there are too many people and applications to look through, so I wouldn't be able to do that. She said there were at least 15 they gave this prompt to and growing. The call ended when she mentioned that the cap for a mid-level designer was $60k. This is insane.

Question 1
Brief: You are assigned as the design owner for a new mobile project. Please spend no more than six hours developing an initial research presentation. You might want to use UX research methods such as user personas, initial interviews, competitive landscaping, etc. Your presentation should include a few lo-fi wireframes for the most important screens, as well as one fully rendered visual mockup of a screen created in Sketch or Photoshop.
