There is no interview process. It's all online, and applications will never speak with anyone from Appen. The first step is getting an invitation to complete an evaluation for a project. In my case, this took months. Once you do a receive an invitation, there will be forms including a non-disclosure agreement to complete. After completing the forms, the applicant will be scheduled for a training and evaluation period. In my case, I had four days to learn the guidelines, complete training tasks and then complete the evaluation tasks. This was incredibly time-consuming and unpaid. I actually gave up because I had submitted far more than Appen's stated estimated number of tasks to complete the assessment and still wasn't finished. I wasn't willing to spend hours on end completing tedious tasks in hopes of finishing the assessment. Others must have encountered similar challenges because Appen allowed applicants with incomplete assessments to finish at a later date. I decided to try to finish the evaluation because I had already invested so much time. Eventually I completed and passed the assessment after 4+ additional hours of unpaid work. In total I probably spent over unpaid 20 hours completing the evaluation process, which was incredibly tedious and excessive. On top of all that, the training and evaluation process only prepared raters for one (in my opinion, the most tedious and time-consuming) of the eight or more tasks types we regularly encounter. I spend the majority of my time working on tasks that I was not trained on. This is one of the worst training experiences I've ever encountered.
