I feel compelled to share my experience interviewing for the reinsurance underwriter role at Archre’s Huntington Beach office, in the hopes that others can learn from the challenges I faced.
The process started off positively with an initial interview with the hiring manager, who was courteous and seemed genuinely interested in my background. We discussed my two years of underwriting experience, along with my claims background. The manager reassured me that while reinsurance roles are rare and my experience was somewhat limited, they would develop a training program to bring me up to speed. I was told that the interview process could be lengthy, and that if at any point anyone felt uncomfortable moving forward, they would end the process.
What followed was a drawn-out process that involved eight interviews over two months, including meetings with the local Huntington Beach team, the North Cal team, the CEO, and other senior executives. In total, I spent more than 10 hours in interviews. I thought this level of investment would lead to a clear outcome, but I was mistaken.
To make matters worse, I was invited to their holiday party just two days before my wedding. Not only was the timing incredibly inconvenient, but the party would include clients—one of whom was my current employer. This created a conflict of interest that could have damaged my professional reputation. I had to decline the invitation, explaining that I had wedding preparations to attend to, but it still felt like an uncomfortable and unnecessary request.
After all of the interviews, I was informed that I didn’t get the job because of my experience. This was especially frustrating, given that my experience had been addressed upfront and the hiring manager had seemed confident they could provide the necessary training. When I reached out to the hiring manager for more detailed feedback, I was ignored, and the recruiter simply repeated the same vague explanation.
What started as a positive impression of Archre quickly turned into disappointment. The extended process, lack of communication, and unprofessional handling of my candidacy left me feeling undervalued. I sincerely hope that future candidates are better respected and that the company considers streamlining the interview process. Spending months interviewing only to be told that my experience wasn’t a fit, after all, was both exhausting and frustrating.
I share this review to provide transparency and to warn others considering this opportunity.
