      Engineering Manager Interview

      May 20, 2019

      San Diego, CA

      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at BRAIN CORP (San Diego, CA) in May 2019

      Interview

Coding assignment that took 4+ hours, option to implement in C++ or Python. Then five one-on-one interviews, one is the hiring manager (your potential boss), 3 potential direct reports, and the recruiter/HR rep. There was no phone screen, if they like your coding assignment submission, you will graduate to the interview process. They were a little disorganized/confused as to the order of people I would interview with and the rooms/buildings, but I wasn't bothered. Nice facility. Nice staff. Very technical in terms of coding/algorithm for a managerial role. I look young (at least 10 years younger) for my age, not sure if that interfered with the role/salary I was seeking. Hiring manager seemed overly busy, looked at his phone quite a bit, seemed a little disengaged and quickly went to "Do you have any questions?", which if you get that too soon is usually a bad sign from my experience. Nobody every asked much about my resume in detail. Focus was on technical expertise, primarily Python, and very specific problems that they encounter.

      Interview questions [8]

      Question 1

Do you recognize the sequence 0 1 1 2 3 5 8 ....? Write a function that given an number, will produce the ith element in that sequence?

      Question 2

What is the performance of my coding assignment (Big O notation)?
      1 Answer

      Question 3

Presented a problem that equates to understanding "integral maps". Essentially write a generalized algorithm for building a map where each cell in input map is either a 0 or 1, and each cell i in the output map is the number of 1s that are present in the input map within a rectangle with cell i as the lower right corner of the rectangle.
      1 Answer

      Question 4

Python: What is this notation mean? [1, 2, 3] What is this mean? (1, 2, 3) What is the difference?
      1 Answer

      Question 5

Have you had much experience in multi-threading in Python? Do you know what the GIL is?
      1 Answer

If you have an engineer that is highly intelligent (think reclusive PhD, trouble socializing with the greater team), what would you do to help the team work this type of individual?
      1 Answer

      What CI/CD have you implemented?
      1 Answer
