      Sales Director Interview

      Feb 23, 2010
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Bazaarvoice (Austin, TX) in Feb 2010

      Interview

My first contact with Bazaarvoice came through a recruiter I met who knew a sales recruiter at Bazaarvoice. They forwarded my resume to Bazaarvoice and about a week later, I received an email from Bazaarvoice requesting a phone interview. I had an initial phone interview with their recruiter in November. The recruiter was 10 minutes late for the phone interview. The interview lasted 20 minutes. We ended the call with the recruiter stating that they were going to recommend me for additional interviews. The next day I received an email stating that they found more qualified candidates for the position and they thanked me for my time. Two months later, I attended an event at their headquarters and met their head of sales. I spoke with him and shared my experience with his recruiter. He asked me what areas I was interested in pursuing and I responded with my interest in sales. He said he would meet with me in person once their quarter ended at the end of January. In early February, he kept his commitment and we met in his office at their headquarters. He was 10 minutes late for the interview and it lasted about 25 minutes. At the end of the interview, he said he was going to recommend me for further interviews and he was typing the email to his recruiters as I was leaving the office. After one week and still not hearing anything, I sent an email to this manager and asked if he could follow-up with his recruiters since I have not heard anything. The next day I received an email requesting a phone interview with one of their VPs of sales and they scheduled it for the following day. About 30 minutes before the call, I received an email from the recruiter requesting to reschedule the interview because the manager was stuck on another call. The recruiter requested that we reschedule it for the next afternoon. I told them I had to confirm it at the end of the day since my schedule was still up in the air. At the end of the day, I confirmed that their proposed time would work for me. Unable to check email to see if they confirmed the time, I called the recruiter 1 hour before the scheduled phone interview. I left a voice message. I finally was able to log in to my email just before the call was tentatively rescheduled and I did not receive any emails. I guess I was to assume that this call was not going to take place. Later that day, I received an email by the recruiter that stated that they were sorry about missing my voice mail and that the manager was booked all day so it would not have worked out. They rescheduled the interview for the following week. I again was prepared for the interview the following week. I waited for the call and after waiting for 20 minutes past the scheduled time, I sent an email to the recruiter asking what happened. They apologized and said they were not sure what happened. The manager was in an off-site meeting and the recruiter assumed that they got tied up in the meeting. The recruiter then rescheduled this meeting for the following week in the morning. I agreed. I made arrangements so that I was prepared for the morning phone interview. About 30 minutes before the interview was to take place, I received an email from the recruiter stating that the manager was called into another meeting and if we could reschedule this meeting to the afternoon. I agreed. Finally, I received the phone interview. The call went well. The manager gave me candid feedback and stated that they were going to recommend me for further interviews. The next day I received an email stating that they have more qualified candidates. I share this experience because I would like you to know how challenging it has been to even have a phone interview with them. I recognize that they are busy and are working a lot of hours. That said, as many of us know, preparing for and making proper arrangements to participate in an interview takes a lot of our time. You can decide for yourself whether you feel that this company handled my interview process in a professional way. I don't believe that they showed any respect for me and my time. To put me through this many changes for one phone interview to me is a lack of professionalism and a lack of respect. Hopefully they read this and it helps them realize that they need to take the interview process more seriously. Honestly, I truly was grateful that they declined me for further interviews because I believe that if they handle their clients this way, they will not last very long in this business.

      Interview

They will waste a lot of your time with a very lengthy interview and pitch process. You'll video chat with multiple people, then they ask you to do an in-depth presentation that will take you days to prepare for.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and I am sorry it was an overall negative experience for you. I can't deny that the presentation at the final stage does indeed require some prep and homework. On the whole we do tend to find that candidates enjoy this part of the process as the deep dive does allow them to better understand some of the challenges we are trying to solve for our clients combined with learning more on the space in which we are working. We do also offer help in the prep either with the Talent Team or with some of the people you've met. I realise these points are probably no consolation to you right now but know that we do hugely value all of the time candidates put into a process so please be reassured on that front.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Bazaarvoice (London, England) in Aug 2014

      Interview

      - Call with internal headhunter - face to face interview with head of team - spent a further 3 hours with a few different members of staff, one at a time - not an interview per say but they're looking to see if you're a cultural fit - interview with VP department - 45 minute role play pitching the Bazaarvoice suite to senior staff members at Bazaarvoice It's a straight forward interview process, but the role play is tough. If you make it to the role play stage, they just need to see you in action and the job is there for you to lose. If you show that you're coachable , want to learn and want the job, you will get it. Advice for any role you're going for - learn as much as you can about Bazaarvoice. Be yourself. Ask as many questions as you can, incuding current staff members not involved in your interview process.

      Interview

Applied online and first spoke to a recruiter, then had a call with the regional VP, followed by two separate "get to know you" meetings with employees outside the office. Was invited and flown down to Sydney for a fourth and final presentation - was given adequate time to prepare in an open format, with three people present and one person on the phone.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

When you are in the role play, you have chosen and prepared a company to sell to. They then use a barrage of objections and difficult situations against you as you to try and sell. It is very difficult to find a gap, particularly as they have worked with the company in the past and already have explored the answers, while you are working with a grasp of what you have gleaned off the BV website, and your chosen company's website.
