      Recruiter Interview

      Jun 16, 2019
      Anonymous employee
      Chicago, IL
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Beacon Hill (Chicago, IL) in May 2019

      Interview

Most unprofessional & unethical interview experience I've ever had. I was contacted by their internal recruiter about recruiting opportunities within the firm & explained to her that I would be interested but only if it were within their Life Sciences division. So she arranged for me to have a call with their new Division Director (DD) who oversees the newest branch of the Life Sciences division. Call went well so I let the recruiter know that I was in the final interview stages with another company that I was also very interested in so if the DD wanted to keep moving forward with me, I would need to have a second interview within the next couple of days. She arranged for he & I to do a Skype interview next, which also went well. During both the phone & Skype interviews, I asked the DD what I would be recruiting for if he were to hire me now since he did not yet have a Bus. Dev. Manager in place here in Chicago. He assured me that his team in Indianapolis had plenty of job orders I could help recruit for & I could even help the pharma team in Chicago on some of their job orders because they had so many. The next day after the Skype interview, he called me to give me a verbal offer where he gave me a detailed breakdown of the comp. & had the recruiter send me their benefits package to review. 3 days later when I received an offer from the other company, I decided to decline it & then called the DD to let him know that I had decided to accept his offer. That's when he said he wouldn't be able to have me start until 4 weeks from then because he now actually wanted to have a BDM hired in Chicago before bringing a recruiter on board. I was very surprised about this sudden change in his plan & said that I would need to start sooner than that, to which he said he would speak with his boss to see if there was any way that was possible & that he would call me the next day at 3pm to let me know. The next day came and no phone call from him. so I finally called him & left a message. He called me back & said he thought the recruiter would have called me by now because now he wasn't even sure if he could have me start in 4 weeks so he recommended to the recruiter that I interview with the pharma division as they were already well established in Chicago & could use a couple more recruiters. It took 2 days to hear anything back about getting me scheduled for a phone interview with the pharma Division Manager. The call went ok but I could tell from the DM's voice & questioning that he wasn't all that into speaking with me. The following week after I contacted the recruiter, she finally gave me a day/time & said I would be meeting with 3 individuals from the pharma leadership team. At the in-person, I was told that the most senior leader would not have time to meet with me because she had to run into a meeting. However, when I asked the other two managers what would be the next step, I was told that the senior leader who refused to meet with me had a few more candidates to interview & that they weren't sure how many people they wanted to hire for their team. As a recruiter, I knew right then that I was being given the runaround. After the interviews, the recruiter emailed me asking how it went. I let her know and she then asked me if I would be interested in BH's admin. division & to be a full desk recruiter- 2 things that I had clearly told her in our very first conversation I was not interested in. After a few days had passed & I was not hearing any updates, I emailed the recruiter asking if the pharma team had made a decision about me. She took 3 days to get back to me & let me know that the pharma team did not have enough job orders to hire another recruiter & that they had already extended an offer to a candidate when I went in for the interview. So then I asked her if I could just go back to the original plan & join the division I received the verbal offer for & that, if needed, I could wait a few more weeks to start. She said that was not an option either because the DD still had not hired a BDM & that he wasn't even responding to her about the candidates she'd been sending him for that role so she had no idea what was going on with him or that division. That's when I reminded her that I had turned down another perfectly good offer for the offer from BH. She apologized & said this had never happened before & that the DD had not meant that to actually be an offer, so I reminded her again that he called me with a detailed comp breakdown & had her send me the benefits package after all 3 of us had discussed how I was expecting another offer & would need an offer from him in order to make an informed decision. She then agreed & admitted that I had every right to view that as an offer. I also emailed the DD & expressed how I felt about this whole experience, to which he apologized for "miscommunication" & gave me the same line about how this has never happened before.

      Interview

The process was simple, I think three in total. I made the final rounds, but the attitude of the AM was not so great. The recruiter was very helpful, although for a staffing agency, feedback would have been nice.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Beacon Hill (Chicago, IL) in Jan 2026

      Interview

I scheduled a time with the recruiter but realized day of that the time zone was not confirmed. I was taking time out of my work day to interview and the recruiter was in a different time zone. I sent a quick message but did not hear back right away. I decided to go ahead and open the interview link sent to me just in case she had assumed the interview would be in my time zone. There was a man already on the call who I quickly came to realize was another candidate. The recruiter got on the call shortly after and told me that my call was for later that day. I apologized and told her I wasn't sure of the time and thought it was a closed meeting. I told her we'd connect via email but never heard back. Awkward.
