The process moved quickly once I was contacted. However, the questions asked didn’t actually get the information that they were looking for. For instance, I was asked what instruments I’ve used. I listed the instruments I was very familiar with. (They were looking for “what instruments do you know beyond an end user level”) I would have responded with, I’m an expert on Illumina instruments, trouble shooting flow cells, libraries, the performance on the instruments..cluster density, quality etc. I know many of the instruments better than our FAS from Illumina because I have experience with custom libraries and how the instruments respond where Illumina has a generic library and performance knowledge.
Now I know for a technical job, if they aren’t wording questions properly…I’ll be sure to add, Would you like to hear about my trouble shooting instrumentation knowledge?
Also, they asked about “have you had a difficult manager and how did you over come that”?
So I answered that specifically about my previous manager.
They were looking for “conflict resolution “. So I’ve been a lab supervisor, I’ve had people have meltdowns many times, throw things at me etc., I would have provided that information, if they asked “ have you had to work with difficult people and how did you over come that?”
I was deeply disappointed I didn’t get the job, but they didn’t ask the right questions to get the answers they were looking for.
