First I submitted my resume and cover letter through their website. It brought me to mysmartrecruiter There I waited for about 10 days until I received a response from Square that informed me a hiring manager reviewed my application and would like to schedule an interview! I really appreciate being able to see if my application has been viewed. As soon as it was viewed it send me the interview request. I was so excited I went and did more research on how I can help Square improve their revenue stream and how we could open up a market in the Asian community since I spoke Cantonese and Mandarin and I had background in retail/ wholesale. I felt ready. I was ready. Then I realized it was through recording... that's when it went downhill for me. I am super camera shy and I get anxiety knowing when I'm being filmed. Once at my cousin's wedding amidst all of the wedding photographers, my face froze for five minutes while smiling for the cameras, I was shaking nonstop, and I forgot how to breathe. Since then I learned from experience to try to let go of that anxiety and being afraid of the camera, but Square brought it all back. After years of public speaking, I was ready for a video interview. But I didn't know I had to be taped and have my video reviewed before they would even see me in person! I thought it was going to be a Skype interview kind of deal. I practiced with their "practice round" with the topic "tell us about yourself" at least three times and I thought to myself, this is the best I can do with a video recording interview. To make matters worse, I had one minute to prepare, and one minute to record an answer for each question. I had to write everything down within the one minute in case I blank out from the anxiety of being recorded. I don't know if that affected my interview that I had to read what I wrote down in the "prep time" but I had no choice. I was going to freeze and blank. In addition to that I felt like I was repeating myself from the question Why Square? and Why Account Management? To me it was one and the same, my background brought me to Square and I'd like to help med-small businesses grow with Square. Honestly, I'm not even sure that's why I said anymore because that one minute went by so quickly and I could barely breathe. I thought my best part was the videos of the guy explaining about the interview process in the beginning and at the end. I thought, that's the community and environment I want to work in, but I thought about saying that after my one minute. I wished the interview wasn't recorded and HR actually spared three minutes to talk to us instead. I think I would have been less anxious. I was prepared, but not for a video recording. Thank you for the opportunity none the less. I thought using Zendesk was a great idea, my cousin works there. I just wished it was more friendly for reallyyyy camera shy people and had more interaction between Square and the interviewee. In the end, aside form a film made by Square I barely know my interviewer/ hiring manager, or at all. It was too impersonal. All I know is her name through the email I got saying they think other applicants are more align with their needs. I think a phone interview would have gone much better.
