      Software Engineering Leadership Position Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Boston Dynamics in Aug 2023

      Interview

Fairly typical at the start, though you are essentially warned you will have to do a presentation and bring it with you. The person who 'escorted' me through the process was pleasant enough and hit me with a technical "grilling" related to memory busses, etc. White board thing, nothing major but perhaps unexpected for a position of this level, especially given my hardware/software background. Their projector didn't work, eating up some of the precious presentation time (more to come). I got the presentation going, and suggested we hold Q&A till the end due to the delay, and everyone agreed ("Good idea!"). Then, two of the four interviewers constantly interrupted, and one of them asked utterly irrelevant questions. It was very odd, yet I had a feeling it was intentional, and if not, then, well, sad. At the end, the lead interviewer said, "Good job, thanks." I said, "Any questions?" Here's the best (worst) part: he said, "Well, no, because you didn't leave any time for questions!" (with a look of disbelief on his face). I didn't bother explaining the delay at the start caused by their equipment or address the interruptions; best to show grace. I decided at that point that if I got an offer, I would have concerns about working with some of this team. I saw other reviews here about the "MIT"ism of the place and I think perhaps this is what I was experiencing. Had lunch with recruiter and someone else who wasn't in the interview, which is OK, always glad to meet others. But they mostly chatted with themselves, not totally rudely, but it was a "tell" that there was zero upsell. The employee, NOT the recruiter, walked me out - another "tell." Anyway, the robots were very cool, of course. I had a little tour, during which I made a mistake by joking, "Atlas is sleeping; he sure must be tired from all those videos." I was reprimanded for using a pronoun that denotes personification. I get it; you don't do that in the company so there's no emotional attachment to a human-looking form. The team members reaction was inappropriate, and I don't think it was intentional which is a concern as well.
