HR phone screening interview where I learned that the job location was actually 20 miles from the location of the advertised job posting in the BMS career website. This was bait-and-switch, the advertised job appeared to be a Director level I had applied for, but I didn't find that out until much later it was only a low level manager position with no direct reports. I was made to believe I was applying for a lateral move based on the job description, but instead this job was two levels below my current role. It was difficult to understand the person from HR because English wasn't their first language.
I had a phone interview with the HM(hiring manager) who was new to their role by a couple of months. The HM spent most of the time explaining their own background. I got the strong feeling I was interviewing the HM trying to convince me of their own background. No time explaining what this job actually was. The HM ended the call saying I would be scheduled with a 5 person panel interview.
I decided to move forward, since I expected the panel interview to take on a more experienced and serious tone. The panel interview was simply a series of them asking me their prepared questions. It didn't matter how I answered them they would proceed to ask the next question, even though we already covered that material in detail earlier in the interview. One proceeded to recite industry standard buzzwords they follow, which was alarming considering the HM just told me in a prior call how much they are in trouble in that area for a long time and need an experienced person like me to lead the team. It was also out of character to say this to me towards the end of the interview, considering I just covered all that talking about my years of experience in successfully doing exactly that. They asked their set of questions, left no time for me to ask any questions, that was the end. At least 3 of the 5 on the panel didn't have what I would call a good command of the English language. They wouldn't speak up and muttered when they spoke. Maybe this is because English wasn't their first language. I have worked with people from all types of cultures and backgrounds, and don't have problems understanding them but for some reason at BMS (formerly Celgene) in Summit, NJ they don't have the expectation for this skill. Perhaps it is because of this "method" of recruitment, by using a bait-and-switch technique this weeds out the bright people in their process who demand the higher salaries.
I was shocked most of the panel at BMS (formerly Celgene) were at the Director level. I was so unimpressed with them, I entirely lost interest in the job and this company located in Summit, NJ after the panel interview which is BMS in name only. Professional I couldn't image me hiring any of them. The panel was not well-spoken and had no focus on what needed to be accomplished in this job, which makes me wonder why they were on the panel in the first place if they didn't know that or why they were hired. BMS has a great repetition, but Celgene has a luke-warm reputation. All the people I had contact with during this process were former Celgene, and had I known that, I wouldn't have applied for the job just based on that. I also wouldn't have applied for the job knowing this was bait-and-switch thinking I could be tricked into leaving a Director level position to be a manager. The job is still posted with a city, state which is 20 miles from where the job actually is, and the kicker is, they don't have a work location in the advertised city on the company career website.
