When I interviewed with the recruiter who outlined the role, salary and details of what they’re looking for so there was no surprise. The role is hybrid, requiring 3 days in-office which is nice, but these creative/marketing jobs can be 100% done from home. I was moved on and interviewed online with two people from the department I’d be working in which they outlined that duties and responsibilities. I appreciate they were upfront about what they were looking for in a candidate, as they wanted someone to be able to perform 80% of their time completing RFPs and 20% other graphic needs, which was fine so far. One of the more insightful questions I asked was what are the biggest challenges the company is facing right now. One of the interviewers responded and talked about how they “occasionally” work late into the evening on some days in order to meet last minute demands. They further claimed that they give comp time worked that is “off the books”, which in my experience is never guaranteed and a potential red flag. As the conversation unfolded something told me this sort of thing would be a regular occurrence, with them asking me if I was comfortable being contacted after work hours to meet work demands from the C-levels. This condition was a huge surprise to me and I’m guessing they may have sensed my apprehensiveness as they decided to pass on my candidacy, which honestly I think was for the best. What they’re asking for and expecting is worth way more than the $60K - $70K they had originally budgeted for this role. If you expect someone to work after hours or be “on-call”, you should be fairly compensated to work under these circumstances.
