I applied for a lifestyle position in early summer, and did not hear back. I let it go, but then in September I was contacted to complete an edit test. As many have noted on this page, it was extremely long -- I had to pitch about 21 articles and write 3, including sources, all unpaid and as the very first hoop to jump through. This would be fine if it was further in the process, but we hadn't even spoken on the phone. I turned in the test and heard back from the editor promptly with a thank you. Then, two weeks went by. I sent a polite check-in, and she replied that I would be hearing back later that week. Again, I heard nothing for two weeks. I checked in again (I'm balancing another opportunity) and she once again said that I would hear by the end of the week. It had been about five weeks since I turned in the edit test. Finally, last week, 7 weeks after the test, I wrote saying thank you for the opportunity to apply, but I'm going to move on. Again, no reply.
I found this experience incredibly disrespectful. I am a professional writer and editor. I do not expect to be hired, but I did put in hours of work with no recognition. I wouldn't be surprised if they use pitches from various other writers' edit tests. What most irked me was how she continued to tell me I would hear back "by the end of the week", thus stringing me along for over a month. Do not apply here, they're incredible unprofessional.
