Had two phone screens -- first with HR and then with the hiring manager. Both went well. Was then given an edit test that included pitching three ideas, writing an 800-word article based on one of those ideas, and editing two full-length articles, complete with feedback. The whole thing took me a weekend to complete. Oh, and it was unpaid.
I sent it over with time to spare on the deadline (which I think was about a week) and heard nothing back. After about three attempts to get in touch with the hiring manager about the status of my application, I found out about a month later that I had been rejected for the role. No reason why. No feedback on the extensive writing test I completed for them -- which, again, was unpaid.
I used to read Bustle quite regularly but the whole experience has soured me on the publication, which is sad because they do hit some good topics. Bustle is just one of those typical major digital publishers that try to get as much as possible out of hard-working people for as little as possible, even if they're not actually employed with them.
