I've never written a review on here but felt compelled to share my recent experience. I have never had such an unprofessional "interviewing" experience in my life. I applied online and a month and a half later, received an email that this was their next "step" in the hiring process (despite never having heard from them) with their edit test attached. The edit test was insanely long and would require about a day's work. I've been in this business for a decade and have never seen such a long edit test, and have especially never been sent one after never having spoken to the interviewer. And they required it due back within 48 hours!
I was away when it was sent and requested an extension. The interviewer said they would "consider" it by x date (the day I got back).
In short, the test took about five-six hours (!!!). It was not difficult but it was ridiculously long. To have a candidate complete an edit test like that with no promise of a job is insulting. Two days later, I received this email from a no-reply recruiting email address:
Thank you for your application to Bustle and your interest in the xxx position. After reviewing your work and experience, we've made the decision to not move forward at this time.
I was shocked because I have been on the other side of hiring and this blatantly rude email would have never been acceptable to send to a potential candidate. In all my years in the editorial sphere, I have never had such an impersonal interviewing experience, with total disregard for my own time and to follow up with such a rude email. I'm truly shocked that this is how they treat potential candidates and feel I dodged a bullet that I wasn't hired.
