I’ve never been in an interview in which I know I was discriminated against for my age until interviewing at Carvana. I seemed to have great experience for the job I was recruited for: I’m personable, have great experience at similar tech companies, and the highest certifications in my industry you can get. I interviewed three different dates and my recruiter said they were ‘happy to have me back’ for more interviews. Everything seemed to be going well on my 3rd interview trip…..and then it happened. One of the senior leaders actually asked, ‘With your experience do you think you have the energy for a start-up’? I was actually stunned and thought, ‘did he actually just ask that?’. He might have well have asked, ‘Do you think at your age you can work as hard as a younger person?’. Amazingly after three good interview sessions I received a decline email. People there’s something wrong at Carvana's Corporate structure. Most companies have a good mixture of ages, but when you go in for an interview at their corporate location look around, it’s 95% people under 35 which is I’m sure in the grand design one of the senior leaders who really has an unfortunate stereo type. I’m sure it’s a good company to work for, but don’t even think of applying here if you’re over the age of 40.
