      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Canonical in Sep 2021

      Interview

First step after applying was completing a written assessment with questions concerning background, experience, and goals. Next, you are forced to take the Thomas GIA test, which is one of those timed perception-and-reflex tests that recruiters seem to love for some reason, as well as the Thomas PPA test, a run-of-the-mill "personality" test. After that was an informal interview with a Canonical team member, the first time I actually got to speak with a human being live. The interview was a glorified phone screen, with the interviewer asking simple questions about my background and letting me ask questions about the position. That being said, the guy I interviewed was polite and friendly. After that, I was sent yet another assessment, this time a written technical assessment. I was told that it would take 2-4 hours to complete, and I did end up spending at least that long on it. The questions concerned Linux tech support, although they were mostly either too in-depth or too esoteric for a pre-employment assessment for an entry-level position. Some questions asked for specific Linux commands to do certain tech support tasks, another asked to walk through the process of installing Ubuntu on a computer, while others asked about the company's products themselves and how to install them, something that no reasonable applicant should be expected to know. I was allowed to look up answers online, which made me wonder why I was even being forced to take the test in the first place. Some answers could be found easily, while some I could not find even with the help of the internet. Apparently, I didn't do a good enough job explaining things from Canonical's own help pages, as I was rejected shortly after submitting this assessment.
