I applied through an employee referral. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Capital One (McLean, VA) in May 2015
Interview
Applied online - Employee Referral - Got a call from HR - 30 min phone interview - Onsite Power day - 4 sessions - 45 min each -
An employee told me that only the long timers in CapOne are in the interview panel and they have to interview candidates as part of the job... I love the idea of having a panel to do interview but who selects the interviewers ... I had a guy show up 5 mins late and left 5 min early... he showed the least bit of interest in knowing about me or even having a interaction with me... Company is great.. location is awesome... Lots of energy... but they have developed this attitude that CapOne has standards which is good... but if they are gonna score people in 30 mins and make decision.. make sure those who do it ... do it for a reason and not as part of the job...
Some bad apples spoil the whole pie...
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
Behavioral - Tell me about a time questions? - While the questions were easy and straight to the point - Two of my interviewers were not really interested in knowing me... They were there just to take notes and rating my answers - One guy actually showed up 5 mins late and left 5 mins early - asked how i convinced somebody to do something that i created - There is really no right or wrong answer to this - you describe a situation and the recommendation you provided and the supporting evidence for it - then he looked at my resume and asked me whether I use R in my current work because it was in my skillsets - i told him that i have taught myself R and I use SAS in my work place... From HR, I came to know that that is the reason he didnt recommend me for the job - totally ridiculous thing - R being open source many companies dont use it in daily practice and i dont really understand how that is relevant to the job .... Case Interview 1: Shipping company valuation problem: Total Revenue 100 Mil FC 20Mil VC - Fuel 50Mil loading/Unloading 10Mil - 5 ships 20 trips 5000Tonnes each - what is the worth of the company? How do you value this company? What is the price per tonne? What will happen if the fuel charges go up? How much minimum the company should ship/do business to breakeven? How much can they lower prices to breakeven? Very straight forward problem - but the way they asked it is not cool - lot of dragging and twisting - Not much interaction between interviewer and me - Interviewer kept mouth shut - Director level employee - I can see the authoritative attitude
Case Interview 2: Campaign analysis - Personalized credit card offer mailing - Cost to print new card is $1.10 50K people were emailed - 5% response rate - 0.03$ per email - 50/50 Test and control population - 5% responded have 80$ spend vs 95% did not respond $40 - Control population average spend is $41? What is happening here is it worth to mail? what is the overall profit from this? Its about $155K per year? Now what if we charge them 5$ fee for the personalized card - what should be the response rate to make the same profit? - This guy was cool - listened to what i have to say and very interactive - Director level Employee
I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Capital One (Richmond, VA) in Feb 2025
Interview
1. Initial call with the recruiter
2. Online assessment - data analysis related questions
3. Data Challenge - 10 days to work on a dataset using a programming language.
4. Power day - 2 cases, 1 data challenge interview and 1 behavioral interview.
I was rejected after the power day. The recruiter was extremely helpful. She provided me everything I needed for the preparation and was very helpful during the process.
All my interviewers were great, EXCEPT ONE. The interviewer for the data challenge was EXTREMELY RUDE. Some of the things he pointed out during interview were totally accurate and I missed them in my analysis. But then at a point in the interview, he rudely said 'You obviously have not written this code'. And I lost it at that moment. After spending hours on the data challenge, I felt disgusted and humiliated by that comment.
I don't have an issue with not getting the offer. I may have missed a few things in data challenge and maybe other interviews too. But a candidate puts a lot of effort and does not deserve to be humiliated in such a way in an interview.
I loved Capital One's interview process, it has made me a better candidate. I aspire to apply for similar roles in 6 months as I have heard great things about Capital One's culture and would love to be part of the organization. I hope Capital One also takes this feedback into consideration and train its employees to be better interviewers.
