      Shop Manager Interview

      Oct 29, 2014
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Capri Holdings in Sep 2011

      Interview

I was hired to be a Shop Manager for Retail Developement for Michael Kors about 3 years ago and since then the interview process has completely changed. Luckily, towards the end of my time with MK I was chosen to train all of the new hires in my District in person or through skype/phone calls. So, from speaking to those colleagues of mine during training sessions, I was able to get information about the new interview process. First, I'll speak on my own experience. The first thing that I want to mention is how every single person that I met that worked in the Retail Development Division was extremely friendly and made me feel comfortable through the whole hiring process. I had posted my resume on a few job websites and was later contacted by one of the HR Managers from Michael Kors. Over the phone he explained the job to me and when I expressed that I was interested he set up a time with me later on in the week to do a phone interview. He was very respectful of the fact that my current job was still a priority and even though most of his suggested times conflicted with work he was very understanding about it. Right after the pone call he emailed me all of the information about the job to help me prepare myself for the interview. The phone interview was filled wit basic questions that you would normally be asked in a sales interview, such as how I am in a fast paced environment, successful customer service stories as well as unsuccessful ones and what I did to try to alleviate the situation. At the end of the interview I was told that the Merchandise Coordinator(Which has now changed the name to District Manager) will be in contact with me to set up the interview. I received an email from her the next day and we set up a face to face interview for the next week. That week the Regional Director happened to be in town and decided to sit in on the interview. Both of them asked me similar questions that the HR Manager asked me. They also asked me how I handled situations working with colleagues or managers that I had differences with and what actions I took to settle the differences as well as my experience helping customers. They were also very focused on sales. Asking me about my past experience with achieving sales goals and about leading a team to help achieve our goals. They also asked me of what my expected Salary would be if I got the job. At the end of the interview I was told that they will contact me to let me know whether or not I got the job. About a month later I got a phone call from the Regional Manager called me with the Job offer. They gave me a tiny bit more than the salary that I asked for. After speaking to other Shop Managers I soon realized that I low balled it, but that's my fault. Nowadays the hiring process has a lot more to it than interviews. They give you homework, where before your first interview you are required to visit the Shop-in-Shop that you will be managing and right down was you see, such as the way it looks, what the sales associates are doing, demographics of the customers that are shopping there etc. Since during most time on this job the Shop Manager is physically working more with department store employees and less with MK employees it requires a lot of partnership, negotiating, phone/email communication, and the ability to withstand and overcome a lot of stressful situations on your own. Because of this they have quite a long list of behavioral questions to ask that help them get a better idea of if you are cut out for the job. Most of the new hires I spoke to went through 3-4 interviews and some even waited 2-3 months before getting hired for the job. Keep in mind, the hiring process can be pretty long because it's a tough job and the amount of problems that you have to work with are never ending especially because you're working with a department store that might not always see eye to eye with what Michael Kors wants you to do. But if you're good at handling stress, working with all kinds of personalities, and communicating then this job would be worth it. It was definitely on of the most rewarding jobs for me. I learned a lot, I've grown a lot, and greatly expanded my network from it.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I think the most difficult question that you can get in a interview for a job that you are truly qualified for is "what are your weaknesses?" You don't want to be pretentious and say that you don't have any, but you don't want to make yourself look bad either.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Capri Holdings

      Interview

A series of three interviews beginning with a recruiter, who would filter applicants for the District Manager, and ultimately the Regional VP. Before the interview with the RVP, there is also a written exercise, to validate communication skills and ability to complete reports. The last interview is always the hardest, but one or more of these may be done via skype. You must dress professional but fashionable.
